I was graduating college, dating this girl, whose 8-year-old neice and 6-year-old nephew we took to the zoo. When the aunt and I broke up, what made me the most sad was the fact that I was no longer an "uncle" to these kids. They were a couple of sweeties.

Now, they're goddamn grownups. 21 and 19.
Hell, the girl is as old as her aunt was when we dated.

Damn.

How old is she?

My sister turns 20 this year. That makes me feel old.

I think she's 21, if my math is correct.
And stalking?

Damn, that does come off as kinda creepy, huh?

I so still think about those kids.
But I would never contact any of them. Too much water under the bridge and a family of my own.

But I have opened the floodgates here, though, huh?
Fire away.

Wow, no, not really.

Really, it's the fact that I was old enough when she was born to have a lot of memories of her being in diapers, crawling, being a toddler, etc. It's hard to believe that was 20 years ago because until the last couple of years I couldn't remember anything from 20 years ago and now I can. It's weird.

I had an experience exactly like that this week! A friend of mine moved to Florida about 20 years ago. When we first met, she had one daughter who was 5. The last time I saw her, she had remarried and had a second daughter who was 2.

She came into town for a few days this week. The youngest daughter is 17 now and showed me her prom pictures. The older daughter just turned 30 and is in the process of writing her doctorate!!!

Crap! Where does the time go????

Some of my students from previous jobs are working on doctorates. I haven't even started a masters. I think I'm old enough to have student taught deena. Maybe not. I'm in a band with the first drummer from the redwalls. He just had his 21st birthday. It's insane to think about major events in my childhood that he has no knowledge of.

But then again, I've played with people who feel the same about me.

This I relate to. I share lab space with two 21 year old females. They were born in 1985, for fuck's sake. I can't even make a reference from the goddamn 90s without a blank stare.

Yeah, it's all relative. What's cool is when the generations can hang. My mom's 79 and one of her best friends from her church is 24.

Shit, I can barely reference the 90s with people my own age. The human race at large has a collective memory like a sieve.

Basically, as far as persistence of memory is concerned, my life is almost over.

This is why people have mid-life crisies.

I never really think about the past in a negative way. Only to reminisce about good times.

Todd, have you looked into the possibility that you may be depressed?

I'm not old, I'm seasoned. I like being able to make pop culture references to things from the 60s and 70s, knowing that 90% of 20 year olds won't get it. I'm more secure with myself these days. I enjoyed my youth, but don't have a real desire to go back to it, or recapture it. I feel better than I did 10 years ago. I only expect that to improve with age. I look forward to being one of those silver haired women I see out today, who has style, grace and intelligence.

I know how all of you feel. This past year my little sis got married. It was an odd occurance. There she was, at the altar, and I was just thinking, "damn, weren't we just doing our homework together after school."

I always feel old when i see the signs telling what year you have to be born in to buy booze and realize I was drunk when these young uns were born.

Enteering college freshmen this year were born in 1988. That's kinda weird.
