I guess I have a Dateline fetish, but seriously...

can they legally do this to these guys? I mean, I say good riddance, but it seems so sketchy to do these traps like this.

Then they leave and WHAM there's a cop with a gun in their face.

good grief. That is ridiculous. I didn't even know that that sort of thing was such a big deal. Big enough to do Craigslist stings. haha. sheesh.

is this the show that's on nbc that everyone keeps talking about?
....where it's almost unfair how they trap the pedophiles?

i guess.

I wouldn't say it's unfair, but I do feel sort of bad for them at moments because I think a lot of them are suffering from psychological addictions.

Also, it's easy to feel sorry for someone when they were caught just leading up to it. But, it would be a whole other show if they were caught in the middle of or right after taking advantage of a minor, you know what I mean?

This show you see these dudes break down and be all embarrased and crying and stuff. SOme of them anyway.

Owning a worn copy of "True Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" maybe, but going to the girl's house after having explict conversations with the alleged minor?!? In the guy's mind he's going to be alone with a considerably easy prey. "1 in 3 girls will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18", "one in five children online has been approached by adults looking for sex". That's millions of kids in our own country. Tens of thousands, and more, in our cities. And its a crime that rarely gets reported.

What's frightening to me is that these kinds of crimes are more common among family and friends. The random strangers they busted on Dateline make up a smaller portion than those known by the child. It's on such a massive scale... I get real depressed anytime I start thinking about it. It is unescapeable... and it shouldn't be.

So yeah, kudos to Dateline.

somewhat related: I just saw a rerun of the movie Election on TV. Probably one of the best American movies of the 90's.

No, I didn't feel sorry for the pedophile teacher.

i watched some of one of these episodes a couple weeks ago. i don't have a problem with trapping and arresting sexual predators, but the portion with the ridiculous television news man acting like he's the king of romania is despicable. if dateline wants to solve problems, why don't they go cover something that isn't getting attention from law enforcement already? and they are not going to deter anyone if that is their arguement. some of the dudes they catch say they have seen the show before.

It's like televised stocks. Except now we don't have to go to the town square to throw rotten veggies. Kinda primitive in its entertainment value.

No problem with busting these guys. However, the vast majority of this kind of crime doesn't involve the internet and usually is from within the family. It's also largely kept quiet. They need to have a show called "UncleBusters".

I see it this way, too. I wish they'd try to help them, not humiliate them. I'm not opposed to the cops doing their thing, but Dateline should cut it out.

Not that I've actually watched the show, so maybe I have no idea of what I'm talking about.

yeah, sometimes i wonder if one of these guys is there for the first time and maybe the girl or boy would walk out and he would smarten up and get out before doing anything physical. Maybe get himself some help and move on with his life in a healthier way.... no need for cops to bust him.

then i realize that i'm living in a dream world and probably 90% of pedophiles aren't this self aware.

Except in most states even soliciting sex with a minor is a crime, whether they actually follow through or not. Every guy who shows up at these things has already broken the law.
