So I went to see him last night at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. It was the last of a 3 night stand in town. He was doing two shows a night.

I was very interested to see what the crowd make up was going to be since he's been one of the most popular mainstream comedians in the last 5 years. I fully expected it to be mostly white folks just quoting lines from his skits or something but it was about 50/50 black and white.

Some local comic opened with a 20 minute set about how all the white folks were out tonight and coming in late. It was mildy funny but I think he benefitted from people just wanting to see someone, anyone come out.

The surprise of the show was when after that guy exited the stage the DJ started playing a beat and we heard someone on the microphone starting to rap and after about 30 seconds Mos Def came out (he wasn't on the bill) and did a 30 minute set. He was pretty good. Can't say I'm too familiar with his stuff but I was impressed him and the stuff he did do. He did some song he wrote about the Katrina victims that was really good.

So after his last song he introduced Dave. He came out to a standing O. This guy is still a rock star.

He talked about turning down the 50 million dollars, illegal immigration, the cult of celebrity, the show "cheaters", groupies, fighting people on crystal meth, britney spears, the media, and the "game of life".

He closed the show with this 15 minute monologue about Iceberg Slim and how he explained everything you need to know about "the game" in his book. He prefaced this story by saying that it wasn't funny but that it was interesting. He was right. It was mostly unfunny.

It was a fun time and the theme through most of his act is talking about "the game". I get the sense that he has seen it all now and that he's a bit more guarded and jaded almost and the material showed it.

The guy still had me rolling during most of his bits and the guy is still one of the funniest dudes around.

Also,

Anyone at one of his shows that shouts out 'I"m RICK JAMES BITCH!" deserves to be beaten to a bloody pulp.

He had a little bit on people coming up to him quoting lines and shit.

Unfortunately I sat in front of the biggest white boy douche bag in the place. He had a baseball cap twisted sideways, baggy shorts, white tank top, and bleached blonde girlfriend. He was shitfaced shouting every played out line from his skits and screaming WOOOO everytime weed was mentioned.

I was embarassed to be white in this environment. I kept wanting to apologize to the black folks sitting around us and telling them "I promise we're not all like this idiot".

Maybe I'm too sensitive.
