My real question is who actually pays to download music?

My feeling has always been that I'll download it for free, or I'll buy the cd. I'm not handing over money unless I get something tangible for it.

This makes me sad because what you are saying is that all the value is the piece of plastic and paper. Should it cost less in digital form, most definitely but the idea that digital music should be free and has no value is wrong.

Well, a full set of encylopedias can cost hundreds of dollars. Or I can log onto Wikipedia for free. It's basically the same thing, isn't it?

no...its not at all. Wikipedia is a free and LEGAL site. There aren't many sites that legally offer lots of free albums in digital format. I don't want to turn this into another argument about the morality of downloading/stealing. People can and will do what they want. What bothers me isn't that but that people convince themselves that the fact that they can do it means that the music itself has no economic value and only the packaging does. Its the music itself that I think always has and still represents the main value in buying an album. I doesn't lose that value in digital format.
