i think theyre playing at tonic this week, wondering if i should pedal my drone loving ass over there.
is it worth the non-petrol related energy expenditure?

Yes. Saw them once opening for Comets onstage at a proper venue and it was somewhat flat. Saw them next at an enclosed parking lot in Queens and it was sublime. I really like them and would suggest going.

thanks, just found out the show's only 5 beans. worth it to try for that price.

the bill:

show:Midnight

E.U.D. (with Liz Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance) plus Growing
$5
E.U.D. (with Liz Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance):
Growing: Joe Denardo & Kevin Doria are Growing. A basic description would be to call them a two piece drone band but they are way too complicated and musical for such half baked descriptions. They have released records on Kranky and currently record for the Megablade/Troubleman imprint. They've toured with Animal Collective, Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance and a bunch of other people whose opinions you would trust.

I saw them open for Mogwai and to me it was less drone and more noise, a la Black Dice (who I saw open up for GYBE in the same club). They were decent in a small club setting. I'd arrive early to catch them again if they were opening for another show I was going to.

To me, they are a whole lot like SunnO))) - a few octaves higher and a whole lot sunnier.

If you can check out the new(ish) disc of theirs - Color Wheel - you'll know what they sound like live these days. It's just louder. Lots more of harmonics and synth sounds (via guitar) than drone these days. I'd say only about 1/3 of the show is honest to god drone anymore. The Black Dice comment above is a good approximation of what's going on these days.

I loved the show I saw when they opened for Mogwai here in Asheville. The only pisser is that Growing tend to blow the power sources when they play. They connect too many amps to the power source and blow circuits.

And anything with Liz from Gang Gang Dance has to at least be somewhat interesting. Plus, she's both adorable and nice.

If you go, tell those bastards to head down to Asheville and to call the guys at Harvest Records to set up a show for them.

also, one of the tunes off of Color Wheel is up on myspace at http://myspace.com/troublemanrecords

They tended to close with this tune on the Mogwai tour. The drone blasts toward the end of the song absolutely destroys the crowd. It's awesome.

I saw them open for Comets on Fire. I don't really remember anything except thinking they were boring.

a brief review:
EUD: liz from gang gang dance & another woman, whose name i didnt catch.
they have 2 drumkits facing each other on stage, the unnamed woman has a plastic pennywhistle she blows into the snare mic from time to time, and there's a LOT of delay on both the kits and liz's vocals.
end result: the germination of something interesting was there, mostly due to the effects [a bad sign] but to be honest, 'cute' doesnt really cut it for me [pointing this criticism squarely at liz]. if you cant play drums, you cant play, but dont expect me to sit there and pretend like a 'wow, isnt this sooooooooo cute, i'm so embarassed to be up here, isnt that cute?????!!!!!' smile on yr face while you carelessly bang along almost in time is going to make it for me.
my friend summed it up perfectly: 'i dont want to be the old guy who doesnt get it, but that was a total fraud'.

GROWING were better, but not great. couldve used more dynamics, and def got more out of it when i jammed my fingers into my ears and made the impromptu tremolo [you've all done this, dont lie]. i think the noise/volume for the sake of noise/volume thing can be interesting at times, but i dont think it necessarily works all the time without exception, and i was on the fence about this one.
it seems like a lot of people use this as a cop-out when they dont want to put any effort into finding some way to diversify their sound, but i dont know if that's the case with growing, having only seen them once [and actually catching the end of one of their sets, apparently, about 7 months back, which i didnt remember at first].

overall i was glad i went b/c i did find i could sink into the sound during growing's set & that can be enjoyable on another level, but if had only paid to see EUD, i wouldve been really, really pissed.

Though I'm sure Garth, Levon and Robbie have put on some lbs. over the years, it's probably not more than they lost when Richard and Rick checked out, so I would be more inclined to guess The Band is actually SHRINKING!
