a brief review:
EUD: liz from gang gang dance & another woman, whose name i didnt catch.
they have 2 drumkits facing each other on stage, the unnamed woman has a plastic pennywhistle she blows into the snare mic from time to time, and there's a LOT of delay on both the kits and liz's vocals.
end result: the germination of something interesting was there, mostly due to the effects [a bad sign] but to be honest, 'cute' doesnt really cut it for me [pointing this criticism squarely at liz]. if you cant play drums, you cant play, but dont expect me to sit there and pretend like a 'wow, isnt this sooooooooo cute, i'm so embarassed to be up here, isnt that cute?????!!!!!' smile on yr face while you carelessly bang along almost in time is going to make it for me.
my friend summed it up perfectly: 'i dont want to be the old guy who doesnt get it, but that was a total fraud'.
GROWING were better, but not great. couldve used more dynamics, and def got more out of it when i jammed my fingers into my ears and made the impromptu tremolo [you've all done this, dont lie]. i think the noise/volume for the sake of noise/volume thing can be interesting at times, but i dont think it necessarily works all the time without exception, and i was on the fence about this one.
it seems like a lot of people use this as a cop-out when they dont want to put any effort into finding some way to diversify their sound, but i dont know if that's the case with growing, having only seen them once [and actually catching the end of one of their sets, apparently, about 7 months back, which i didnt remember at first].
overall i was glad i went b/c i did find i could sink into the sound during growing's set & that can be enjoyable on another level, but if had only paid to see EUD, i wouldve been really, really pissed.
