Just saw on the AP wire that Jodie Foster and Dean Devlin say Mel Gibson turns into a different person when he's drunk, has always been an alcoholic, is not anti-semitic, but is combative, difficult, self-loathing and very odd.

i didnt say i saw the words free pass. i extrapolated that if these other 'stars' are saying he's not antisemitic, yet he says those things, then something doesnt jive.
either he's antisemitic, or they think that being drunk lets him off the hook for saying shit like that because he becomes 'a different person'.

or they understand that alcohol, especially for an alcoholic, can completely change who you are and what you do. It's not a justification, it's a reality.

i simply think this guy's getting more credit than he's due. maybe 'justification' is not the word i would be looking for, but the fact is that being an alcoholic and being anti-semitic are not the same thing.
if you get drunk and decide that 'the fucking jews' are the world's biggest problem, i would argue that that thought didnt come from the bottle, it came from within you.
ive known only a few alcoholics in my day, not many, and not one of them did anything when they were drunk that was not somehow part of their character to begin with. maybe my experience with drunks is limited. i'll take that as a good sign.

I agree that there may be something already in place within the dude. However, it's just like when you know some docile fella that becomes a wannabe kickboxer when he's had too much to drink. I think there are many different chemical reactions that take place when someone is intoxicated, and although the chemical reactions don't create words like "sugartits" or "I blame it on the jews", it could increase the liklihood that you say something like that without catching it and thinking, "man, what a messed up thought". It's like having no filter on when you're wasted. It'd be like when you're sober and you catch yourself thinking something racist or insensitive or just plain mean. You stop it before you say it and say, "goodness, I can't believe I just thought that" etc. I don't think that just because the filter is off that you somehow mean everything you say and do when you're drunk.

I believe everyone is responsible for their actions. However, labelling someone because of their mistakes is not something that I think is fair. Especially when their mistakes are magnified or just plain happen due to some impetus besides their own will. I think he should apologize to those he harmed verbally, but I don't think it's fair to call him an anti-semite. Although he did make that movie about how the Jews killed Jesus.

Actually, I don't know how many times he's done it. I have heard bits and pieces from sources like Entertainment Tonight and that other show that's just like ET.

I think that labelling based on mistakes shouldn't ever happen, in an ideal world. Obviously it will happen. Now, if he started supplementing his outbursts with tossing Jews into a homemade gas chamber, sure call him anti-semitic. However, the real process should be getting someone to address the alcoholism rather than just saying he's a jew-hater. I am not saying I don't do it. I have seen plenty of dudes get extremely violent when drunk over and over again and plenty of girls get "exploited" or taken advantage of because of their intoxication to know that I too will label people. But I guess I try and look at the root cause. And for Mr. Gibson, I don't think it is a deep seeded hatred of Jews, but certainly a much bigger issue than that, as it relates to alcoholism. He can just be an idiot and disrespected because of making anti-semitic remarks, but he can actually do some real physical damage due to the alcoholism.

Personally I think he's a dick, but he's probably a dick who got that way from a bizarre childhood and it's taken him this long to realize he's got to do something about his assbungery. Hopefully he will.
