demo track from
Made Up Lovesong #43 maxisingle (2006).
I posted this as a request ysi awhile back, but wanted to give it its own thread.
The song feels old and seeped in soil, like Leonard Cohen-in-the-forest, though Fyfe doesn't sound anything like Cohen. Like early REM songs, the lyrics evoke both geography and psychology. Song isn't necessarily about an actual river, though it's fine if it is. I think it's about a childhood love, though. Had to transcribe the lyrics, but I think I got them right. A very pretty song that sound like a thousand year old folk song, even though it isn't.
Woody Brown River
like forks calling knives across sands of flags
woody brown river keeps calling me back
well she runs like a cheetah, melts fire when she sings
how I long to be dwarved by her watery wings
to the woody brown river I often would ride
and stand at her banks and toss pebbles inside
watch the sky crack a laugh as its sentences fell
for the woody brown river ran deep as a well
woody brown river you're breaking me up
a sea shell just landed in my water cup
and you're always there waving from the back of my mind
with desperate hands that claim to be kind
and woody brown eyes that ran to me blind
so as forks beckon knives across sands of flags
woody brown river is breaking my back
when you find the sunset you just crave the sunrise
and I shall never sleep til I've slept in her thighs.
