Yeah, I think when the kids I knew started falling into Rush, I was getting into hip hop, and a short while later, punk.

What constitutes an above average drummer for you?

Anyone that excites me when they play. Jim Eno does not. Again, I wasn't saying he was bad, just that he's average - there's a million drummers like him and he fills the particular need of the band, but I don't hear anything in his playing that indicates anything beyond "average." Take Paul Weller's drummer, Steve White. Weller's music doesn't require anyone beyond pretty simple drumming, but he adds in flourishes that really take it to the next level - but he doesn't sound showy, either. You never get the sense that this guy's going "check out my chops, dude," but you know he surely could. But that's my problem with Spoon - NO ONE sounds showy. They're all doing "just what's needed" and it gets incredibly boring after awhile. Spoon is just a very average sounding band. Fun at first, very boring after about 5 listens. Traded off after that.

Dude, I am one of the few Obnish unwilling to harass you for your continued love of Rush. You do NOT want to alienate me!

Yeah, but see, I haven't stopped listening to Rush since 1989, so nothing will diminish my love of Rush. Feel free to harass away!

I'd say Britt's vocals are incredibly showy and full of a range that is missing from a lot of contemporary rock music, but that's slightly off topic.

But, if you're looking for excitement first in music, Spoon's probably not gonna deliver (at least not up front). I think their approach is incredibly focused and balanced, which is what keeps my attention (and requires it while listening).
