I didn't know about this guy's situation -- what a bummer!

Benefit Concert for Rogue Wave's Pat Spurgeon at The Independent, September 30

On September 30th 2006, San Francisco band Rogue Wave will host a benefit concert at The Independent to raise money for their drummer Pat Spurgeon, who is in desperate need of a kidney transplant.

The benefit concert will feature performances by Rogue Wave, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie,) Matthew Caws (Nada Surf,) Ryan Miller (Guster,) John Vanderslice, and other special guests. Daniel Handler (AKA Lemony Snickett) will MC the event.

Pat was born with one kidney and it failed. He had his first transplant in 1993, which served him well until now. After 13 years, it has started to deteriorate. He has been on dialysis since April and is hoping desperately to find a donor. Provided he finds a donor, there will be an enormous amount of costs that both Pat and his donor will incur. In a logical world, medical insurance would cover the costs of this procedure but it does not.

The expenses can be huge and this benefit will raise money for costs such as the donor's travel, care, bills, lost work wages, as well as Pat's expenses, care, bills, etc. while he is in recovery.

If you cannot attend the show, Noise Pop encourages you to donate whatever you can by visiting www.roguewavemusic.com

Im as liberal as the next guy, and while I empathize with the situation, Medicare covers costs for people with end stage renal disease, which is what anyone requiring dialysis is considered as having. Also, most insurances will cover transplant costs up to a point, also.

The more likely statement is, "being in a band, Pat likely has no insurance", although I also doubt that, since he has congenital health problems.

It sucks what hes going through, and yes, there will be costs, but lets at least look at the situation objectively, and I cant say that I would expect medical insurance to cover my "expenses and...bills" after something like this.

Of course, none of this really matters to Pat. I hope that anyone who can go and donate to this does so. I think Ill drop a donation off myself.
