How well does the gapless playback work? I'm wondering why it has to scan the tracks in advance since Rockbox does it in real time. I'm hoping it doesn't just trim the silence at the end of the track because often it's supposed to be there.
It's not trimming anything, it's just adding something to each song's tags that tells the new software what to do with it should you choose to have the album be gapless (yes, you still have to manually choose to have the album be gapless even after this.) I think this may be in order to get around making the hardware on the Ipod work to handle the gapless situation, but I'm not sure - I'm only going on what I've read people suggesting. From what I understand, in order for the songs to play gaplessly, it takes more memory to get rid of the gap because the songs have to cue up in a certain way so that they overlap enough that the gap is gone. I don't quite understand it myself - I just know that whatever it is, it's not as simple a solution as we all think it was to implement and other players that do it may be doing so in a way that's not very efficient. Since people already complain enough about the Ipod battery's efficiency as it is, I'm guessing Apple's been working hard for quite a while to make sure this doesn't impact battery efficiency in a negative way. Unfortunately, it sounds like they needed to put as much work into Itunes 7 because it's pretty buggy - I'm not having a ton of problems, but mine crashes on exit nearly every time, sometimes doesn't start right most times, and is SLOW as hell. I'm waiting a couple days to update to 7.0.1 to see if that introduces any new problems while solving others.
