I actually like the self-titled one...the ease of "Jenny", the pavement-by-numbers of "Discression", the simplicity of "Church" - that's a pretty fine album, if you ask me.

i love anything the man has ever touched. he could fart on a snare drum and i'd still buy it.

Wait a minute, what's Sung Tong? I feel like I should know what that is, and I don't.

relative to Pig Lib, it's a fucking masterpiece. i'd say 7-8 of the SM songs are all pretty quality -- however, i always thought that album was *really* rushed and underdeveloped. i think if he had used the album recordings as tracking songs (aside from a few) and then sat on them for a bit..wow. classic record. but, he didn't, and i'm left debating the merits of his approaches with myself.

spent part of yesterday listening to SM all the way through. damn, that is a fine record. i think it deserves a lot more accolades than it got. i'd give it a solid 8.5 on the PFM scale if i were rating it.

for some strange reason i was expecting KPH to post about the Pigface album Gub. i guess the pigs and the similarity between gub and lib did it.

Malkmus vs. Pigface. Who wins? We all do.

i always thought this song was underrated at best. nice vocal line, the drums are straight out of 60s garage rock. it'd be neat if the bassist played with the beat, alas.
not much of a chorus to speak of, but the song sure means well.
maybe too traditionalist/plain sounding for pavement fans?
see, now this song could've used a big guitar solo, rather than these textural mood things, courtesy of a memory man.
it really gets grooving by verse 3, but still SOOO restrained. and the mix...sigh, the mix.
and...it just never really goes anywhere. good summation of the record, really.

This was the only song I ever really liked on that album. I sold it so I don't know if I can revisit it anytime soon. Can't remember if I ripped it, but I think I did.

Do you have the bonus disc that came with Pig Lib, initially? I think it pretty much beats the album, especially the first song.

At least Malkmus manages to make this stuff fun in a live setting. I never got to see Pavement, but I really enjoyed the one time I say him play with The Jicks.

the only time i saw him perform the Pig Lib material was opening for Radiohead and that was pretty much the worst venue for it.

i think "Us" has a neat beat, a pretty alright verse and semblance of a chorus, but that it just never goes anywhere. all set-up, with little pay-off.
