I inherited a large collection of pipes from my grandfather when he passed a few years ago and am just getting into smoking occasionally. I have an uncle who is a collector/smoker and we tend to smoke a few bowls when he comes to town a few times a year.

Anyone have any favorite tobacco's I should try or know where I could find some good information regarding all of this stuff? It's pretty interesting and I'd like to learn more...kind of a bond with my late grandfather sentiment. I've tried the google route and wasn't coming up with much.

I come from a family of pipe smokers. My dad, uncles, and grandfather all smoked pipes. Alas I smoke no pipe. I just feel kind of ridiculous doing it like I'm too young for pipe smoking.

I have. Just like cigars, it's a good way to make you slow yourself down.

Find a good tobacconist and they'll undoubtedly have some blends you can buy by the oz. to figure out what you like as opposed to buying a 5 oz tin (which will last an awful long time if you don't smoke regularly). I almost always prefer the tobacconists blends to the major brand tins, with an exception of dunhill nightcap. Also, the more you smoke a pipe, the less you taste of the pipe and more of the tobacco, so count yourself lucky to inherit a nice collection that's broken in. Also, hanging out in a tobacconists shop, you can ask other pipe smokers what they dig.

If I had a friend who was considering smoking a pipe, I'd probably point out to him that it'd make him look like either a) a precious dickhead, or b) a clueless old fuddy duddy. I might also mention something about the foul odor and, if I was feeling particularly didactic, the health issues.

But, all things considered, I say go for it.

Did the bandits who murdered him smoke pipes, too? That'd've been funny. Pipe smoking victim and a bunch of pipe-smoking assailants.

So, pipes will be the next indie-scene must-have, now that white-belts, neck-beards, suspenders, & roller-skates have been played-out?
