I think the "avant" album of the year category is pretty much a joke. What signifies something as "avant" and not indie. I'm putting too much thought into it.

yeah its the only place they exist, but those are two of my absolute favorite records, and want them to win something even though neither fit the categories.

CSS for best punk album? Really? How does a disco band qualify as a punk band? No way! The Thermals should get the nod.

Obviously they did a poor job of categorizing this shit, and even some categories are dubious (avant), just vote for what you like most then politely STFU. Just be thankful there are alternatives to Pazz & Jop these days. By the way, who did you write in for the criminally overlooked box at the end of the poll? Format, Bachmann, Camera Obscura, Phoenix, and Asobi Seksu (album art nod withstanding). Clearly not everyone will be pleased with the choices available, but I'm interested in seeing the consensus results, though the Schmoo poll is my most anticipated year end barometer. i voted for who i liked the best in each category, disregarding whether artists should be in said categories. if css wasn't in there, i would've voted for the thermals.

chad vangaalen had a second record come out just this summer called skelliconnection that's pretty freaking great in my opinion. not sure if it's male artist of the year caliber, but it's definitely a cool album.
