Check out the Rosenberg Trio, too.

i tried looking for some django contemporaries, but other than stephane, i could only find modern day versions that sounded to me like the equivalent of david sanborn's take on jazz. maybe it's the 1930s production values that give it so much personality.

Someone's gotta ask it: Have you seen "Sweet and Lowdown"? Great film about that ear and style of playing in a comedic situation.

Too bad I'm at work. My wife is into gypsy jazz and could probably name a few. When I get home this evening and I get the chance, I'll ask her.

*edit* good site to look into:

great artist/playing resource

what blows my mind is how faithful these contemporary acolytes are in a live setting. Now why they can't capture that and put it on disc... i dunno. Maybe it's production values, but i'm betting it's django himself, and the whole quintette for that matter.

Matelo Ferret may be worth looking into. He was a contemporary of Django. His sons still play in the style today.
