At a show?
The music is just so right on that everybody in the damn club is undulating IN UNISON. It hasn't happened often to me, but the three or so times that it has, it's been magical.

Super Furry Animals – Doing "The Man Don't Give a Fuck" at Lounge Ax in 1997. The whole room looked like a bobbing ocean of heads. Sadly, it was not the same response ot that same song at their 2003 show at Abbey Pub.

Stereolab - Doing "Jenny Ondeoline" at Lounge Ax in 1995. Ditto, but it was more of a gentle sway.

Primal Scream - "Jailbird" at Metro in 1994. Was never a fan, but that communal transcendence changed my mind about them.

Now, I'm not just talking about the music taking you away. I'm talking about it taking away several HUNDRED people at the same time. You all have had that experience, I'm sure... so tell us where, when, and with what band.

Thanks

when super furry animals played metro two years ago, it seemed like me and the two people next to me were the only ones going bananas over "the man don't give a fuck." how times have changed.

godspeed you black emperor at the starlight in philadelphia, march 2003. it was 18 degrees outside and doors had been delayed almost 2 hours because there was a problem with soundcheck. when people finally got inside, we all just sat on the floor because we were cold and tired. during godspeed's set, it was like a sea of bodies while they played. totally amazing.

Spiritualized - many of the times I've seen them. When the band is 'on' and especially during the Pure Phase-era, they pretty much put the entire audience in a trance.

Polyphonic Spree - most of the times I've seen them. The audience is less in a trance than looking like the scene from the Blues Brothers with JB as the Precher. But it's still a group mind thing going on.

Phish - tons of times throughout the years I've seen the audience hook up with the band and it was trance-like. Then again, it was probably just all the drugs.

Slowdive - When they played Souvlaki Space Station at the TLA in Philly, the entire crowd did the full on trance/undulation.

Akron/Family - 2006 - Grey Eagle, Asheville. Granted, the 20 minute noise jam 3/4 of the way through the set got most of the audience to leave, but the remaining 30-50 people were treated to a 20 minute improvised piece that got slower and slower. The entire time, those of us that were left got closer and closer into a small crowd at the stage. The ball of people were all hanging on each and every note and although the entire band played with their eyes shut, you KNEW they could feel the moment happening. For a bunch of reasons (none of which involve drugs, surprisingly, it was the most intense musical experience I'd ever had).

I will admit, that was the song that hooked me in when I saw them live.

And then I heard the CD version and was kind of disappointed.

yeah, that song would definitely be key in any "songs that way better live than recorded" thread.
