I saw Iwo Jima yesterday, and it definitely deserves it's Oscar nod.

Agree with those standing up for Dicaprio--I thought he did the best acting job in the Departed. Baldwin and Wahlberg were good, but pretty one-dimensional. Much easier roles to play than DiCaprio's. And he was even better in Blood Diamond. Good year for Leo.

Judy Dench (Notes on a Scandal) was a little better than Mirren (Queen), but Mirren is a lock for the win. Both were outstanding.

And the lock of the ballot is Scorcese getting his first Best Director Oscar.

Little Miss Sunshine?! What hath ye wrought, oh "indie" filmmakers?

Derris couldn't possibly have hated Wahlberg in Boogie Nights. That...that would be baffling.

Maybe it's because I'm Canadian, but I have no interest in seeing those two WWII companion movies. If I was going to see them, I'd sooner see Letters, only because it's a different perspective. The other one I'd see only because of Ira Hayes.

And Little Miss Sunshine was pretty fucking funny, actually. The presence of Steve Carrell doesn't necessarily mean it's terrible. Watch it, if only for Alan Arkin.

It's like punk rock: easy to play, hard to play well. Probably more of an Oscar nom gimme than it should be, but that doesn't make the best of the bunch any less awesome.

Your taste in movies is almost as bad as your taste in music. You wouldn't know talent if The Archangel Gabriel personally bestowed it upon you. BLECH!

Babel looked so bad that it was painful.

Glad to see Whitaker get a nod...great turn as idi Amin.

Ohhhh look, Marky Mark is acting mean and talking in a southie accent......man what a stretch. Good thing we didn't see it in Four Brothers, Perfect Storm, and Basketball Diaries already.

A case of good material in the hands of an okay actor IMO.

Funny the only good thing you have to say is about the only movie that came to your miserable neck of the woods.

I gotta tell ya I am very much enjoying this new take-no-shit version of Derris on the board these days.

yeah, i'm surprised he beat out jack for departed supporting just because of jack's name. jack did well himself, but marky stole the show in all the scenes he was in. must've been a fun char to play.

I just don't feel the need to see everything that some arbitrary taste maker deems good. I bet you saw Little Miss Sunshine in a Bee costume didn't you?

For the record, I saw 3 whole movies in the theater this year. 2 of which were fucking awesome, and one of them (Devil Wears Prada) was definitely better than 3 of the Oscar noms, site unseen.

No, I liked him in that. Also, Fear and Three Kings.

It's when he tries to pass off that psuedo action hero shit like The Italian Job, The Big Hit, etc that he gets annoying. I think I just like him in more supporting roles instead of leads. That being said, I haven't seen Invincible yet.

I also find his public persona annoying as well. Around Boogie Nights he was always acting like he was the shit and the bad boy, etc. Then a couple of years later when this became a problem, he started doing every interview or public appearance with his kids in tow to clean up his image, etc.

What can I say? Just not a fan.

Yeah, I can agree that overall, he's better suited as a supporting player. He was great in 'Three Kings'. I actually don't really care much for him personally either, partly because of how much I fucking hate Entourage. That fact that he's responsible for releasing that piece of shit into the world is a caneable offense.

I'll agree on the Supporting Actor thing. I don't understand not liking Entourage, Charlie. This new side of you is disturbing ;)

After watching some of the first season, I felt an overwhelming urge to kill every single character on the show, Batts style.

Holy shit, that's one of my absolute favorite shows. I LIKE the fact that some of those guys are such assholes. It makes it more real. I certainly couldn't watch it if they were a bunch of junior leaguers.

What is this like Peter O'Toole's 8th nomination?

45 years after he should have won.

It's about time for his liver to be awarded the Irving Thalberg.

Fuck yeah, brother.

The complete wash-out for it among the noms is [bill.walton]just terrible[/bill.walton].

& on a note unrelated to film, sorry about your Raiders hiring the USC guy as their new coach. But I'm sort of glad it's Kiffin, not former BYU/NC State/USC guy Norm Chow; I'd rather his legacy be grooming so many college qb, then taking Vince Young (who's, like, so dumb; 8 on the wonderlic lol) to a Super Bowl. Chow would have just been chewed up & spat out in Oakland in three years, another in the line of failure since Art Shell's first firing.

Jeez... I love Raider tradition, and appreciate that Davis is a heroic freak, but it's time for him to hit the convalescent hospital and let the Raiders run free. This guy was Davis' second choice among the USC assistant coaches... The Black Hole indeed...

Can you elaborate?

Did you see Flags of Our Fathers? I had high hopes for it but, for me, it just fell completely flat. The flashing back between the two story lines just didn't work and left me annoyed.

I hope this ones better. I'm hoping it focuses more on the battle. I don't see them having a War Bond drive storyline for the Japs. Maybe a home front storyline I guess.
