I went to my Controls Systems class today and my professor, a guy by the name of Hibbert Duncan whose from Jamaica, told us this story. I've tried to recreate it as close as possible to the way he told it so you can get the gist of it. It's kinda long but worth the read. And this is a true story, so happy reading.
"So when I was a kid I used to hang around this club with a bunch of people I knew. We used to spend our time playing soccer and cricket. Well football really, soccer is a silly name. Some of us became quite good at it and i think over 100 guys from the club went on to represent our country in international events. But anyway, when I was a kid it was hard to get into high school. So a lot of guys would go to school until they were 15 and then they would learn a trade, like welding or auto mechanic...jobs like that. Well I didn't really like any of those, auto mechanics get lots of grease on their hands and stuff and I didn't like that much. One of my friends became a very good welder, he was very good at it. But he quit after a while, and he didn't come around the club very much. He wanted to become a singer. It seemed like a lot of guys wanted to become singers, but it wasn't very profitable. You would make a record and the producer would maybe give you a fiver, and how many records could you make a year? Three, five, maybe six? So thats like what, 25 a year? Not very good money.
Anyway when I would see him I would try to tell him that he should go back to welding. "You were a good welder you should go back to that. You're wasting your time, go find a job." I used to try to tell some of the other guys that were trying to become singers that. Anyway, it turned out that one of those guys was Bob Marley. So I guess it was good that he didn't listen to me. But at the time I thought it was good advice. (laughs)"
I don't think I ever expected to hear anybody tell me that they tried to talk Bob Marley out of a career in music, but thats what happened today. It seemed extra appropriate to post that since it is Marley's birthday today (which I assume is the reason he told us the story). Anyway, that is all.
awesome story, thanks
