it's like a waltz in 15/8 time, but yeah :)

That or mixed-metre, which is always fun.

Soundgarden - Limo Wreck (bonus points for five-measure phrases)

So what are some good modern waltzes:

The Beatles "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"

Although it has a triple feel it's not technically a waltz, it's in 12/8 not 3/4.

Musicians would feel it in ONE-two-three TWO-two-three THREE-two-three FOUR-two-three. That makes it compound triple and not simple triple. Someone also mentioned Breaking The Girl which is also in 12/8, and so is Manic Depression.

The difference lies in the how fast the sequence of chords comes and when it cycles back around again at the end of the phrase, it feels and sounds like one again.

Russian Hill off of Jellyfish's Spilt milk would be a better example of a waltz.

Then Open Arms by Journey could go either way which is tricky, but feels closer to 3/4 than 6/8 or 12/8 because of the slower tempo and the drummer's feel.

But the difference doesn't really matter except to musicians because it affects how we think and play. And even then it doesn't hugely matter to us because if we're thinking about it too hard, it starts to sound janky.

I know.
I just like to keep it simple.

And, in that spirit, it is a feel thing as you were saying...

true.

Still you can divide 6/8 into 3/4 or 2/4, since the numerator is how many divisions in a measure and the denominator is what kind of note the divisions are.

You would almost never divide 12/8 into anything except four groups of 8th note triplets so it almost always feels like it's in a slow rolling 4, and not 3.

Just for nerdy edification.

And I thought math was just for one kind of geek!

Indeed. That's what I get for trying to remember lyrics off the top of my head, instead of Googling before posting. I should have remembered she pointed out the gabardine suit, and HE said the bow tie was a camera.

'Atom And His Package' by Atom And His Package is a waltz, I believe.

I think "Walk Away" by Cheap Trick ( w/guest Chrissie Hynde ) might qualify.
