I was expecting to be really disappointed with this based on all of your tepid reviews, but I guess I don't get what people are talking about. It's a lot like the first album--I would generally expect people who liked that to like this. But apparently it's dividing fans and making fans of naysayers. Weird.

yes... i agree with most of that

but i think this runs laps around the debut... the structures are more intricate.. and there is a wider variety.

i definitely don't see why someone would like the older stupider album and not this one

#1 for me so far

I never really listened to the first album because the only song I heard didn't grab me but I kind of like this one.

It's no different now - people trying to outdo ! each other in extremes. There are people who like X, and there are people who say X are wimps; they like Black Flag.

In that case, I strongly suggest revisiting the first, because I think you'll like it. Give it a once-through, skipping the disaster of an intro track.

I'm currently at 25 spins on this album and it's my #2 of the year, just behind Of Montreal (33 spins) and just ahead of the Shins (32 spins). How anyone can give up on an album after only listening to a few songs is beyond me. I give everything I buy at least 10 spins, and even then I give them a fresh listen a couple months later. It's a good policy because that Thermal's album would have never cracked my top 10 of '06 were it not for that refresher listen I gave it a couple months after I bought it. The flip side though, is that I return to Deerhoof, Liars, and Hold Steady albums that just never click. And these are lauded albums I really wanna 'get' but just am never able to.

Alligator is a great example of this. At ten spins, I was like, "meh," but at 25 spins I was starting to realize this was my favorite album of the decade and by 50 spins it was my second favorite of all time (behind the Bends, for you curious types). Then again I have no life and am fortunate enough to listen to eight hours of music (of my choosing) five days a week at work.

If you've legitimately given this new CYHSY disc an honest chance and still don't like it, I can respect that, but if you haven't you should really put this thing on once a day for the next week and then make a judgment call.
