It's difficult. She listens predominantly to industrial-dance and goth rock. I listen to wussy twee pop, folk, and alternative rock.

The only things our tastes really cross paths on are the big '80s bands (Smiths, Cure, Depeche Mode, etc.) and a lot of riot grrl (Hole, Bikini Kill, Babes In Toyland, etc.), though she has surprised me with things like Mazzy Star when we were out for dinner.

Go nuts and fill it with late-90s New Orleans rap.

You can never go wrong putting on some good rock n roll. I'd avoid the twee.

What's the objective of this mix? To introduce new music? Woo? Just because?

I don't get the question. If you know what kind of music she likes, unless she's asked to hear something out of her usual tastes, which would mean she's asked for something and you know what to put on then, just put what she wants on there.

essential questions that need answers.

if i already know exactly what someone listens to, i'm not going to populate a mix with that because i figure they could make a better mix themselves. and unless i know that they don't like my favorites, i'm probably going to work with what i know best for it.

Mr. Harley needs to clarify if he wants music styles girlie already likes or music styles she don't know yet.

It's her birthday. I already got her Stranger Than Fiction on dvd but I wanted something extra that's more personal.

The idea was to make a mix that kind of bridges our tastes. If I wanted to, I'm sure I could download a bunch of tracks from Assemblage 23 and bands like that and whip up an easy mix of stuff she likes.

Anyway, I've got a pretty good list come up already. I'm going with The Birthday Massacre, Dresden Dollls, Jack Off Jil, Rasputina, and bands of that ilk.

you can always go the 4AD route: dead can dance, cocteau twins, this mortal coil...

throw in some miranda sex garden, portishead, and snakefarm, and there ya go. not very rocking but not all rocking mixes have to be rocking to rock.

The finished product:

1. Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead
2. The House Of Love – Shine On
3. Young Marble Giants – Credit In The Straight World
4. The Organ – Steven Smith
5. Interpol – Narc
6. Jack Off Jill – Lovesong
7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Date With The Night
8. Placebo – Every You Every Me
9. The Dresden Dolls – Girl Anachronism
10. Hawksley Workman – Tarantulove
11. The Jesus And Mary Chain & Mazzy Star – Sometimes Always
12. Siouxsie & The Banshees – Cities In Dust
13. The Birthday Massacre – Horror Show
14. The Magnetic Fields – I Have The Moon
15. Book Of Love – I Touch Roses
16. Future Bible Heroes – I’m A Vampire
17. The Human League – Stay With Me Tonight
18. The Smiths – There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

I'm pretty happy with the results. It's definitely got a night/goth/new-wavish bent to it, although the first and last track are purposeful anomalies.

We'll see what she thinks.

I have to say, that's a really good mix.

i was going to suggest some new stuff from Skinny Puppy, NIN, and Ministry if she likes that kind of stuff.

Other than "Bizarre Love Triangle," no song transports me back to college more immediately than this one. So many drunk dances with so many drunk chicks ending with so many blue balls...
