It's astonishing how big it's become. I think 30 million people watched the season premiere.
I'm a reluctant watcher, but I've got to admit they've constructed an impressive edifice of a popularity/singing contest. Took the building blocks of Star Search, let people show their personalities (for better and worse) and added consistent judges, audience participation and gonzo sponsorships.
