Just curious to see if you all can relate.

Lately (the past 4 months) I've noticed a real change in my music listening patterns. I've been listening to much happier, upbeat, energetic music and artists, and much less darker, harder, aggressive music. When I put on something slightly harder, I can only listen to it for a bit, then head back towards the light. :)

I'm quite sure it's due to me being in a much happier and content place in my life. Either that or I'm just becoming a pussy.

Have any of you noticed something similar in the past, or even now?

Most definitely...

There are times I look at my Ipod (w/ about 8000 songs on it), and I can scroll through the entire catalog, and not find one single thing I want to listen to on it. I'll be in the mood for an obscure disc sitting on my shelf.

As for genres, same deal....Some days I wake up and want 70's funk/soul, and everything else sounds like shit....But some days, I want, Whitesnake (or other fun metal) and nothing else.....Odd.

I've been gravitating more toward contemplative but non-hokey folk. Like Kate Rusby, Luka Bloom, Shawn Phillips. Not freak-folk, but more Nick Drake-y.

Don't have much tolerance for party music lately.

I don't play the Metallica, The Cult, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, or Ozzy as much as I did in High school. I guess it was just the time in my life.

All i've really been in the mood to listen to lately is punk (then again that's typically what I go for when I don't know what i'm in the mood for, because I guess most of my favorite bands are associated with punk) hardcore, or metal.
For a while it was blues, soul, funk or rap.
For a while inbetween those two, it was psych. Anything related to or remotely psych. Pop, folk, whatever.

My moods change with the months/seasons. Sometimes they last a season, but I typically associate a lot of the music I listen to with a period of time. Generally when I picked up the album or when I really got into it. Elvis Costello reminds me of Winter because that's when I really clicked with "My Aim Is True"

Sometimes i'm not even in the mood for music. That sucks.

I pretty much like "regular rock" in all its permutations, and not a whole lot else, aside from hard core rap (when driving) or something slow and contemplative (new National, Dean * Britta) when its real late, and I am drunk.

i used to spend a great deal of time listening to sad, beautiful music. i still have a very warm feeling for many of these artists and the records I overplayed for many years, but i came to the conclusion that listening to this type of stuff all the time helped to keep me in a sad (and perhaps not so beautiful) state of mind. consequently, there's a lot of records i just don't put on anymore except in rare occasions, though if i hear one of them randomly (at a bar or a friends house, for example), i'll still enjoy it very much. this doesn't mean that i now search out and only listen to happy, non-consequential uplifting music, but rather that i'm just more aware of how some music affects me. if you don't like feeling down, it's a bad idea to keep on taking downers, right? i now have a similar outlook on music, and keep my downers in small, regulated doses.

I definitely go through phases by mood and by genre. Currently in a blues and soul phase.

I have my "go to" artists when I'm in a particular mood -- I guess they are like aural comfort food.

definitely true for me... been listening to a lot of introspective stuff lately, not necessarily relegating it to one particular genre. And I tend break out the upbeat, mindless stuff for kicks and grins. Anything too somber just depresses me right now... not interested.

My tastes are in season in the fall and winter, as is my mood. All I want to listen to of late is Neil Young.

I'm not in somber. Introspective does not have to equal portentous.

But then I've never understood when people lump literate mellow music into the same category as wrist-slashing depressive music.

When I'm particularly sad or in a bad mood I generally can't listen to music at all.

But other than those extremes in mood, yeah, the music reflects how I'm feeling.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for certain music and sometimes music gets me in a certain mood. I've got plenty of my "it goes to 11" RnR moments, R&B, Trip hop, country, stupid happy Swedish pop, and so forth, but I am always a sucker for the minoresque sounds of Mojave 3, Clientele, Hem, Neko Case, and others.

i've been doing a good job keeping with new releases this year thanks to the new computer. mostly i'm listening to stuff i've never heard before, usually snagged from the sky bicycle or i eat bears blogs.

in addition to the new pop punk stuff i spin constantly that no one cares about i've been pulling out some old favorites like

buffalo tom - big red letter day
morphine - cure for pain
minders - hooray for tuesday

I go through phases were I become obsessed with a particular band or c.d., Lately I've been obsessed with modest mouse's Lonesome Crowded West and have listened to the cd on headphones almost every night before falling asleep for the past two months

We seriously need to hang.

I've been listening to a lot of "Spring" music: !!!, Panda Bear, Pop Levi, Klaxons, Besnard Lakes (which is sort of Fall/Spring mix of tunes) although I've been spinning DBT - Blessing & A Curse for the last few days. But yeah, I definitely listen to different types of music with each season/mood.
To go further, I've started listening to a lot more rootsy/alt.country/folksy tinged music since moving to Nashville. Your surroundings have a lot to do with it too.

This is the season that I start relistening to more and more and more Dirty Three again.

I'm listening to something I downloaded called "Live! At Meredith", and it's totally slaying me. Gotta be one of the best live bands I've ever seen. At first, I didn't understand why Warren Ellis was so surly and arrogant when the music is so beautiful, but now I get it: it's like 'everyone in this room is fucking sad, now let's celebrate it loud like angry fucking animals'.

I've taken all of the decision-making out of what I listen to and have mindlessly set up an endless queue based on when I purchased/acquired things + single artist marathons which are gradually progressing through my collection in alphabetical order. I give everything the same amount of listens regardless of my opinion of it or whether or not I'm in the mood for it.

I'm a music-powered robot.

my mood changes approximately every 4 minutes, so the random format works well for me.

Yeah, I generally select what I'm going to listen to based on mood/weather/atmosphere/etc.

Although I don't own any particularly angry music. So when I'm pissed off, I usually watch tv.
