Why has nobody recommended this to me before? This book is great so far!

I've tried to read Rushdie before and found him tough going. Maybe I'll check this one out.

I read half of Satanic Verses. I don't really like Rushdie's writing style much as I remember.

Just thought I'd share that.

I've read Midnight's Children, Satanic Verses, Haroun & the Sea of Stories , and East-West and all are quite good.

I've been seeking out all the booker winners, of which this is one. So far it reminds me vaguely of 100 years of Solitude, in that it has a wide, multi-generational scope and a penchant for the odd magical realistic detail.

The only other Rushdie I've read is The Ground Beneath Her Feet, which left me Meh.

I think Todd likes this guy and has recommended him in the past. Not sure if it's this book or not.

My words (almost) exactly as Max displayed them...

Rushdie does some great stuff with language, and I love that he is steeped in a storytelling tradition. His stuff is really dense though. I haven't read any of it in years.

Pick up the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Nifenegger (sp?)- its being horribly marketed as a "book group book" in most stores, but is terrific writing in a first novel. A seminal moment comes at a Violent Femmes show- how cool is that?
