So is she the most "under the radar" 2 time Oscar winner ever?

Seriously, can anyone name any movies she's been in other than "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby"(i.e.- the ones she won Oscars for)?

besides karate kid 3. I know there was the one about women's suffrage and some period piece flick.

I am by no means saying that the woman can't act, in fact, I think she is a perfect example of what talented actresses can do if given the opportunity.

That being said, am I the only one who sees the similarity between her "Boys Don't Cry" role and "Million Dollar Baby"? Both characters speak in this white trash dialect, both are sympathetic characters in gut wrenching emotional dramas. Both are characters are outside the stereotype of what a woman should play, etc.

I guess my question is is she really this amazing actress or is she benefiting more from the roles she picks? I mean Meryl Streep has won it a couple of times hasn't she? I think she has incredible range and I just don't really see the range in Swank. Maybe we'll see what she can do now since she will most certainly get any role she wants now. It's just strange to me that she hasn't really been in that much and is now this 2 time winner.

Two words, Derris:

The Core.

That's why we don't see this doll Swank in so many movies.

Have you seen it? I paid a dollar to catch it on the silver screen -- mmmkay, it was 40,000 Lei, but same thing -- and I still wanted my Got-damn money back.

Despite the fact I don't like Ms. Swank. Nope, not one bit. Maybe "The Core" will do for her what "Walking Tall" did for the Rock...

She's right on path to making a score of romantic comedies with limey twat, Hugh Grant. All the power to her. I couldn't stand her on 90210 and I can't stands her now!

That may be. We'll just have to wait and see. "Range" can be overrated. Does Jack Nicholson have range? From my view he's played the same character over and over since Cuckoo's Nest. Still, I don't think anyone would question that he's a great actor.

I'll take Hillary Swank's acting over Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, and whomever is the flavor of the month on the cover of People Magazine anyday.

Maybe the criticism being directed at her is just sour grapes? It's funny that you don't hear of male actors being berated for continuously playing typecasted roles, do you?

For example, Chazz Palminteri playing a gangster....yet again.

My prediction: she will continue to do movies like boys don't cry and million dollar baby but now people will actually go to see them.

superficially i'd like to agree with you, but it doesn't really hold unless palmenteri had won oscars for two of his portrayals.

Jesus. Simmer down now. I never said the woman couldn't act I was just posing a question. What the fuck do I care if she wins or doesn't? The day I get sour grapes over who won the Best Actress award is the day I give myself a Colombian necktie.

Oh and I thought Aniston was pretty good in The Good Girl.

the other night steven colbert had a good line about swank: "if we've learned anything, it's that no one, in this town, gets beaten to death better, than hillary swank." which i think pretty much sums it up. and agreed about aniston, i don't think that she's really a bad actress, just got way too famous to really be taken seriously because she's given the opportunities to make a boatload of cash in shit like Bruce Almighty.

and she got the crap beaten out for her in both. . .

and at least she didn't pull a haley barry and start bawling at the oscars about how she's blazing a trail for black women and then proceed to "take it off" in her next film. god she's such a joke. . .

I would have gotten a great kick out of Hilary Swank up there at the mic saying "she's blazing a trail for black women."

Come to think of it, she played the same character in The Gift too.
