Yeah, some of you probably thought by the subject this post would be a Pavement lovefest, but we're talking ska here, and who don't like some good ska on a lazy Saturday afternoon to get your weekend groove on track. Been listening a lot to The Question lately by the Slackers, one of my favorites from the last few years. What a fine, fine CD. 1998 was the year and it's filled out with 19 solid songs, not really a skipper in the bunch. And if you listen to many ska or reggae collections, you know that is not usually the case. These guys are the best traditional ska band out there, no doubt. Yeah, that's a little tiny pun there at the end :)

So I'm thinking the Slackers do sound an awful lot like the English Beat (or just the Beat for our UK friends) in many ways. Not like a copy, but just in style and substance. Very nice music for an afternoon listening with some friends and a coupla beers. So I decided to type in "slackers english beat" in the Google toolbar to see what would pop up, and this cute little review thingie from Ink Blot came up. Thought some of you might enjoy it because it's pretty much right on the groove about what I was just saying about the Slackers...

i've always preferred better late than never and even redlight over the question, but i may just have to drag it out again because it's been awhile since i've heard it.

are they still around? there's like 6 of those bands that were on hellcat that share musicians and i always mix them up. Hepcat's first album was the best, tough.

I'm too lazy to read this whole thread, so I'll just say "I agree."

clarification: Hepcat's first album was released on Moon. Then they had one on BYO. Hepcat's first album for Hellcat Records was "Right On Time" and is by far one of the more superior works of modern-day ska.

Thanks for the recs and stuff, everybody. That Hepcat record was recommended to me by Stone the last time I posted about the Slackers on another board so guess I should move the priority up a bit. Sounds like a winner Image
