First, none of you know this but because of the event of last week I have put myself on restriction until the end of the year. My self-imposed punishment is no posting or discussing politics for the rest of this year. I did mention this on CMJ a few hours ago.

I’m posting this so I am breaking my rule already but I won’t comment. By posting this I also let you know that you won’t hear anything political from me for a while. In actuality I wonder if I will be able to do it?

Maryland is not as high as 105. Not a chance.

Maybe the scores are per household.

I'm suprised that Indiana isn't lower. It's a pretty dumb state from my 23 years experience of living there prior to Chicago.

This is a hoax. The Economist published it and then retracted it in the following issue. The fine print of this site says this as well.

Maybe we should be thinking of a more constructive way to change things than just calling the red states dumb.

Someone on this board has to know this but isn’t average IQ around 100? So the way I am interrupting it this it that only 18 states in the union have average IQ’s. That seems a bit low but…

I would think that major US cities have a bigger percentage of educated minds. So of course a place like New York would rank high with all those CEO’s, doctors, professors and so on. Thus bringing the average up.

Quote:
"i was bored last night, so curiosity got the best of me and i decided to see if there was a correlation between %bush voters and %college grads by state (nerd!). so i found out each state's %Bachelor's degrees from the census and ran it--indeed there was a negative linear relationship between %bush voters and %college grads (R = -0.71)-- which means, the less % of college grads, the more % bush voters. DC had the highest % of college grads (42.5%) and the lowest % of bush voters (9%); West Virginia had the lowest % grads (16.1%) and a relatively high % (56%) bush voters...... Interestingly the last 14 ranking states in grads (<22%) were all bush winners (many 55-60+% voted for bush), and 11 of the top 14 ranking states in grads (>30%) were kerry winners."

DC voters also elected Marion Barry after he got caught smoking crack, and last week Ward 8 voters elected him to his old city council seat.

Based on the Wechsler scales of intelligence, for both children and adults, the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. Approximately 68% of persons tend to fall between +1 and -1 sds. Above/below average intelligence based on these scales is generally considered to be greater than 1-2 sds above the mean. So technically, all of those scores are in the "normal" range of intelligence.

That being said, it's clearly not a scientific poll at all, and all the "results" are extremely dubious. For those not in the know, take extreme caution when interpreting any intelligence score.

I also recently read in a CS Monitor story regarding party lines that college graduates are actually MORE likely to vote Rep. whereas grad school graduates are more likely to vote Dem. (as are those who didn't make it past High School). For the record. Interesting fact given that there are way more college grads in the country than grad-school grads, and that there are also more Bush-voters.

I never understood why young people would vote Republican. I remember having friends in college and at 19, they were card-carrying Repubs.... 19 is too young to be Republican!!!!

Nevertheless, scientific or not, it doesn't surprise me that Mississippi is dead last on the IQ list.

I thought the average was 100 but I thought the deviation was 5-10.

I knew to take this with a gain of salt but it’s always fun to poke fun at the other side and say see, this was printed in the St. Petersburg Times.

Thanks DumpJack because in actuality that info was what I was really looking for all along. Average IQ came up in a conversation the other day and never got around to looking it up.

I read somewhere that a Chimpanzee has an I.Q of around 85 and this is about the same level as a 5 year old child.

According to this list then, Mississippi is populated entirely by 5 year olds and Chimpanzee's.

Hey, no problem, glad I could clarify. Of all the things I learned in my psych BA, I remember standardized testing (intelligence, personality) the best. They're interesting devices, but only when properly applied and interpreted.

This made me think of the Winston Churchill quote:

"Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains".
