I recently listened to the entirety of Abbey Road for the first time ever, and "Come Together" and "I Want You" are the only good songs on that thing.

Listen to it again.

It's no Wavves.

It's no Glasvegas, either, I guess

I have a soft spot for quite a few songs on Abbey Road, but I agree with its detractors that there is an intolerable amount of indefensible schlock on it -- especially on side 2 but really on both sides.

"Carry That Weight" could've been a good song if they'd bothered to finish it. As for the rest, it's unfinished nonsense tied together by admittedly impressive technique. "Polythene Pam" and "Mean Mr. Mustard"? Put 'em alongside "Rocky Raccoon" for the soundtrack to your next PBS pre-school special.

man i love polythene pam and mean mr. mustard.

me too

abbey road is EASILY my favorite beatles album, primarily because of side two

Rads, rads, rads ... even you must not believe you. Or especially you.

The "suite" on side two is a masterpiece. It is also late period (like really late period) Beatles so it is both rococo and neurasthenic...Fragonard for days, and like many extended suites of the period there are moments of glory and moments of dreck (c.f. Tommy can you hear me). This was a moment where rock's reach had exceeded its grasp and the sound its failure was a powerful soundtrack to the zeitgeist's slipping into darkness.

It's overplayed. Like a word that you say over and over and over until it dissolves into phonemes without meaning... and suddenly is too familiar to even hear with any meaning.
