Harold Norbert "Harry" Kalas (March 26, 1936 - April 13, 2009) was a Hall of Fame American sportscaster, best known for his roles as lead play-by-play announcer for Major League Baseball's Philadelphia Phillies, National Football League radio broadcasts by Westwood One and as voice-over narrator for NFL Films, a regular feature on Inside the NFL.

Damn.

he's a huge part of why I love baseball, and watching the Phillies without him will flat out not be the same. I'm glad he got to call a second WS final pitch.

wow. this one's sad.

even though i am a mets fan, i grew up in the greater philadelphia area and kalas' broadcasts had a huge impact on me.

edit: wow. marilyn chambers died today too. never in my life did i think marilyn chambers and harry kalas would ever be used in the same sentence.

I'm only 25, but my parents didn't have cable, so the way I kept up with my Phillies as a later teen/early 20-something was with my radio balanced on my bed. It had to be positioned JUST SO or a sheet of static would interrupt the game. Some games were spent in such a haze that I could only hear the occasional score update at the beginning and end of innings. Through this fog of uncertainty Harry Kalas' voice cut better than any other. During those summers, with sweat, tears, and an unquenchable thirst for post-season action, Kalas' voice guided me, and millions of others who were listening or watching Phillies games.

RIP.

my favorite thing about Harry on the radio was the silence, he's one of the last if not the last that knew WHEN TO SHUT UP. He would have long pauses and come back with the perfect phrase or explanation.

Every labored word out of Chris Wheelers mouth is like a dagger in my heart. Baseball isn't the same.

It's just unimaginable for me. I've listened to him broadcast hundreds of phillies games and this one hits hard. One of the greatest voices of all time.

Him and Richie Ashburn are united again. Too bad we can't enjoy it any longer.

this is a damned shame. He had one of the best announcer voices ever. When I was a kid, I went to the same stuffy prep school as Steve Sabo, the founder of NFL Films, and so a couple times a year he'd come visit the school and just run a bunch of movies and we'd get out of class for the day. Harry Kalas' voice literally was the sound of me getting out of class for the day.

I do take solace knowing he got to see the Phils win this year, though.
