This is incredible. I just added it to my wishlist.

They put out great sets. The one they put out for Joe Brussard's label was incredible.

If you get it before I do let me know what you think.

Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the 80's Underground

as mentioned above.

When you're ready for your next one, I always think of this as the companion to Left of the Dial. Utterly fabulous.

i don't know if i missed this thread or just ignored it in the past. a lot of good suggestions, many of which i own myself. i totally forgot about One Kiss Leads To Another though - I lost it in the not-so-great car break in of 2007 and I have to get it back in my collection.

Another one I lost was Simon and Garfunkel's Old Friends. They have another, simple, "all their albums" box but i liked this one. three discs, all the hits, and a bunch of great rare tracks too.

Speaking of good box sets, just posted this in the NP thread...

Roy Orbison: The Soul of Rock and Roll

If you're looking for a Roy Orbison collection and want to go beyond the typical single disc ones that generally do a decent job of collecting his biggest hits on Monument with varying degrees of sound quality (The DCC ones is probably the best in this regard), then this 4 CD collection is an excellent way to go. It gathers all the big hits from his classic period, plus a more generous than usual chunk of early Sun hits, including some unreleased demos. It also gives you a selection of what he recorded in the 70s and 80, including his duet of Crying with KD Lang, tracks off Mystery Girl (his 80s comeback album), and a couple of Traveling Wilburys songs. This is probably the only all-inclusive Roy Orbison collection out there. You need this.

speaking of Orbison...

This is incredible. I got this when in came out in '99 and still listen on it. 4 discs spanning late 60s live show through 80s live set.

Quote:
ImageOrbison's widow, Barbara, organized the release of these four live concert recordings taken from various points in Orbison's career. The set list doesn't vary much from show to show; an artist like Orbison would be hidebound to sing his hits, and the audience certainly lets him know which ones they want to hear throughout this four-disc collection. Regarding sound quality, these are soundboard tapes cleaned up as much as possible; don't expect them to sound awful and they won't, but don't expect them to sound like a record either, because they fall quite short. However, you don't come to a Roy Orbison concert, tap your foot, and say, "Nice mix on the bass player." No, you come to hear Orbison, and here's one time when a vocal-heavy board tape has the spotlight falling on the right set of shoulders. If you're going to subject yourself to listening to four hours of one person singing louder then the entire band track put together, it might as well be somebody great like Roy Orbison. He never falters once in these shows, presiding over all of them with a laid-back, good-natured stage personality that perfectly fits the music. For completists and hardcore fans only, perhaps, but here's one of rock & roll's greatest singers tearing it up in four hit-packed concerts; it doesn't get much better than that, sound quality be damned.
