Let me give you an example:

The Blues Brothers opening with Otis Redding's "Can't Turn You Loose". It just has a perfect groove, drive, and thump and builds crazy energy.

Can you think of any other comparable songs that are killer set openers?

GBV - "Motor Away"
Although not quite on the same level as "I Can't Turn You Loose", it still a pretty fekkking great way to open a set.

How about
The Pogues - "Gridlock" into "If I Should Fall From Grace With God"
?

for the hair metal contigent... (me only I guess)...

I always got pretty pumped up with
Whitesnake 'Bad Boys'
& Skid Row 'Slave to the grind' being their consistent set openers....

Start Me Up... was the classic, at least for the first couple of decades.

Great example, by the way! The Otis original popped up on shuffle the other day, but all I could think of is how lethargic it sounds compared with The Blues Brothers version.

The flaming lips have been opening their shows with Race For the Prize for nearly 10 years now, for good reason.
