I caught the opening leg of "An Evening with Wilco" in Miami Beach last night. Phenomenal. They hadn't toured these parts for SBS or (the album), so I haven't seen them in a couple of years. They are truly on top of their game. Tweedy is still comedy gold, but not too happy with those trying to shoot video.
Halfway through California Stars, Tweedy spotted a 12 year old kid from the audience holding up a sign, brought him up on stage and handed him his guitar to finish off the song, which he nailed. They played an intimate "acoustic" set, which Jeff billed as a way too see how the band warms up back stage. It included a stripped down version of Spiders/Kidsmoke, which was really fucking cool...a Bluegrass version of Casino Queen, complete with an upright bass and Sansone on the Banjo. The band played Jesus, etc. without singing a note, leaving that up to the audience (a bit cringeworthy but overall good vibe). Just shy of 3 hours long with a short intermission. Closed out the night with a tribute to Alex Chilton - Thank You Friends, with each member taking a verse.
Note (for those going): Posted time on tickets was 8:30 and they hit the stage no later than 8:45. Get to your seats early.
Sounds like a cool show. I wanted to go with wife and some friends but we figured at the end too much mula in the days of cutting back. Gleason theatre is a pretty cool venue especially if you're going to hang on the Beach before or after for a bit.
