i wouldn't say they're totally original though. if i were choosing rappers, i'd go with someone like mf doom, saafir, edan or subtitle.

They both started out fairly typical of their crew and got progressively weirder as they got older, creating a whole style and world that was totally their own. I've never heard more than a song or two of the folks you mentioned, so I can't respond to them.

I think Weezy is for sure. MF Doom, maybe but there are lots like him, and some, like MF Grimm, that are better. This may sound stupid, but I would say Tricky, Cam'ron, Kanye West, and outkast are all really original.

He is, but so are any number of really old artists who are no longer doing anything particularly vital or original. Sonic Youth, R.E.M., U2, Aphex Twin, Massive Attack...

Lou Reed's still out there doing shit. Have The Rolling Stones officially called it quits yet?

But then Dalen started this thread off with Sigur Ros, and I guess DJ Shadow is a reasonable enough suggestion by that measure.

That's why when you find an artist that does this AND does it in an original way it's the greatest thing ever and makes you fall in love with music all over again.
