Hughes to get Prettier in Pink
Source: JohnHughes.net , PrettyInPink.com March 31, 2005

In his first public statement in quite some time, director John Hughes declared that it was time to revisit some of his most popular characters. Molly Ringwald, John Cryer and Andrew McCarthy have all agreed to reprise their roles from Hughes' 1986 teen romantic comedy "Pretty in Pink" for a sequel that should hit theatres just in time for the 20th Anniversary of the movie next year.

In the sequel, the trio would reunite twenty years after the fateful prom from the first movie to reminisce about the past and look towards the future together. When asked if he was inspired by Denys Arcand's decision to do the exact same thing with "The Barbarian Invasions", a film that won a foreign language Oscar in 2005, Hughes had no response.

Molly Ringwald, who is still in the fantasies of many guys in their 30's and 40's from playing Andie Walsh in the first movie, said that her character will be more modern, more mature, and less whiny. "Sure, she'll still wear pink, but I just want to make sure that no one thinks I'm just trying to rip-off Elle Woods or something. I mean, I did do it first." Most recently, Ringwald has been appearing in various Broadway musicals.

John Cryer, who played "Duckie" in the original movie and who has been starring with Charlie Sheen in ABC's "Two and a Half Men", was happy to return, but not so happy that he would have more competition than just Andrew McCarthy's Blaine McDonnagh this time around. "When I read the script and found out that JH planned on giving Andie a whole slew of male suitors, I wondered if I should even bother to do this, especially when he said that he might try to get guys like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt to make cameos. I mean, c'mon! What does the Duckster have to do to get some of that? He's waited thirty years for her! He's 45 and still a virgin, ferchrissakes! And he has to deal with that for competition?!"

Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark have threatened to record a follow-up song for the soundtrack album, tentatively called "If You Leave Again", and Hughes said that if this proves successful, he may start brushing up the script for "Some More Kind of Wonderful".

James Spader declined to comment.

They pretty much got that right. There's mind-numbingly horrible, and then there's this concept.

Really, is there a need for a sequel?

I'll wait for the re-make with George Clooney.
