I wish they would remember that they were a band before that album.

I think they tried to with Embryonic, and that was an unfortunate misstep.

I wish Radiohead would replicate something similar to "The Bends", like I wish the Flaming Lips would replicate something similar to "The Clouds Taste Metallic". Seems like a point in time that no one wants to revisit (1995?); but it's the best either had to offer.
Solid albums that neither has come anywhere close. But if you can still sell sunday-afternoon jerkoff jam-session shit to stagnant drugged-out tardos to pay off your property, I'd be all over that too.

Prior to the last time I put that album on a few days ago, I might have disagreed with you, but now I think I have to admit that you're right. It was no more a misstep than anything else they did in the '00s, though, IMO.

The last three Lips albums have evaporated any desire I once had to see them live. And I've seen them twice, anyway, once on tour for The Soft Bulletin at the 40 Watt.

And that was a great show. As cool as it would probably be to see them play just that album, I liked how they played a couple of songs from Clouds and one from Zaireeka back when I first saw them. Some of those Soft Bulletin songs aren't too exciting live.

I'll second both of these opinions.

I agree that CTM is the best Lips album, but I don't think they're capable of going back to that. Even if they got Ronald Jones back in the band and put Steven back on drums, I just don't think they have that in them.

I shouldn't, but I get kind of annoyed when people make these "Radiohead needs to get back to the sound of The Bends" type of posts. It's not their best album. However, it would be great if they'd drop all the electronic shit for once and make a really simple, stripped down record. I think they could make one that sounds nothing at all like The Bends, and it could still be great. They've developed a lot as musicians since then, and I really wish they didn't feel like they had to dress everything up in futuristic sounds to stay current. They already did that. They're great musicians all around, and they should make an album that isn't such a fussed-over studio project. Do some live-in-studio first take shit. I know they could do it.

agree,

I bought Embryonic a few days ago cause it was cheap and I thought I might be missing something. All I can say is maybe a few good songs, more of the same from the last several albums. And, while I still like Soft Bulletin, there's a vibe on the Clouds/Transmissions albums that's more loose, a captured energy rather than a made up one.

i'm not so interested in them making new music like those old albums, but in the four times I've seen them play they've played ONE song pre soft bulletin. And it was "she don't use jelly."

I am seriously thinking about tying a visit to my brother in Nashville around this... I like to time my visits around the Ryman schedule.

I might be alone on this, but the second half of Transmission always reminded me of side two of Abbey Road. Not as many songs running into each other but it builds and fades and builds back in a similar way.

Cool. I haven't seen a full Lips show since 2003. I tried to watch them cover Dark Side... last year at Bonnaroo but I was so far back I could never get fully involved in the show.

Not included in the above dates is that they are coming to Charlotte on May 17. I am pumped.

i saw them two years ago and they played "bad days" and "mountain side." i have come to realize that was a rare night.

so, are all of the dates above the soft bulletin in full?

Saw them here in Dallas last month. Best show I have ever been to. Shit was flying everywhere. Giant video screen with porn in the background. He rolled around in a ball! Gimmicky but amazing!
