i am pro-cake, though i admit their insistence on adhering to a very specific formula for all of their songs can become grating when listening over extended periods of time

Years and years ago my mother's then-boyfriend was trying to bond with me over tunes and I allowed as how, sure, Cake were all right. They are his favorite band. I get tickets, t-shirts, signed CDs, etc, and will as long as the dear man puts up with my bossy mom and the band itself continues. Sigh.

Like everyone else, I only know the singles. I liked "Rock and Roll Lifestyle" when it came out in 1994. Got sick of the "The Distance" and "I Will Survive" pretty quick in 1996 (didn't mind "Frank Sinatra" though). Didn't really mind the singles in 1998 ("Never There" and "Sheep Go To Heaven" at least, "Turn the Screws" was meh). Only know "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" since then, and that song is acceptable as well.

(this post was mostly an exercise in looking at wikipedia to see how many of the songs I knew)

I'm not a fan in that I don't own an album or listen to them. But I can see why people like them and on some level I appreciate what they do. Their songs always seem to have some pretty great horns and some interesting touches.

When I was a junior in high school, I liked Italian Leather Sofa quite a bit.

I was thinking, no, Cake's not that bad, until I started recalling all of their singles and thinking of how painful it would be to listen to them all.

And I remember a really long car ride from Atlanta to New Orleans in 2005 where the playlist consisted of Cake, No Doubt, The Fugees, Sublime, 311, and Soul Coughing among others. Clearly someone had some serious nostalgia for MTV hits circa 1996. It was a rough trip.

This is also a US v. British English issue. In British English, collective nouns often take plural verbs. Dalen is fake-british, ergo he's well within his dialect's usage rules.
