Rolling Stones open up the vaults, starting with '73 bootleg
It seemed for many years the Rolling Stones were hesitant in releasing archival shows and music and preferred to concentrate on their current work. Then, slowly, things began to change, most recently with the releases of expanded versions of “Exile on Main Street” and “Some Girls.”Now the floodgates have opened. The Stones announced Thursday a new Rolling Stones archives that will feature rare music from the past. The initial offering is a 1973 concert from Brussels for a mere $7. (It's available here:
http://www.stonesarchivestore.com/ ) The concert will be familiar to bootleg collectors under the title of “Europe '73”, “Bedspring Symphony” and “Brussels Affair.” It's also a great show. According to the Stones website, the original boots came from various radio broadcasts, including the King Biscuit Flower Hour.
The new archival release is an upgrade taken from the original multi-track masters recorded by Andy Johns on the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio and sweetened up by Bob Clearmountain. The Stones had reportedly considered, then shelved the idea of a live album from the '73 tour. The band was in the pinnacle of its musical power with Mick Taylor on lead guitar. But the idea was shelved. The Stones' website makes an interesting observation: “If there was one Rolling Stones bootleg that needed to find its way into the mainstream, Brussels '73 was it.”It's good to see the Stones finally doing this. They have a rich history to mine. One can only wonder what goodies they've got hidden away that will now surface.
