I just ordered HBO yesterday...between this show and Eastbound and Down, and Curb I think it'll be well worth my money.

Who is he? I feel I should know with how much they talk about him directing the pilot.

I really liked last night - enough of a different period (beginning of the roaring 20s, end of WW1, young Capone, Luciano, etc) that it doesn't all feel like something we've seen before, even though it is mostly stuff we've seen before.

I liked that they didn't mention Rothstein as "the guy that fixed the Series" since I don't think that was general knowledge by this point.

Looked amazing and like Gar said, interesting time period.

Not sure I'm buying Buscemi as some aging gangster yet. At least not the kind who can smash a guy bigger than him's head on a poker table.

Is this based on anything? If not, I find the use of real historic characters tedious within a fictional story. (exception being Inglorious Bastards but that was so over the top)

Still, sold me enough to watch next week but it's not taking over Mad Men as of yet.

i usually don't care for fiction spliced with history either, but this is based on truth. i'm sure there are a lot of liberties taken in the name of dramatic license, but all of the main characters are based on real people or are composites. (the book is also called "boardwalk empire.")

Looks like most of the Boardwalk Empire discussion has gone on in the Walking Dead thread, so I will bump this.

I've decided that the show needs more Omar/Chalky. Basically, his last scene of him winking at the Election Party was the only real part of the finale that I liked, so I think the snow needs to get Chalky more involved.

Also, I'm just not really convinced by a lot of the other performances. I've liked Buscemi, Michael Shannon, and Kelly MacDonald in a lot of other things I've seen them in, but I don't really like them in this show. Never cared for Michael Pitt, and this hasn't changed anything. Michael Stuhlberg was ok. I'll start watching season 2 but could end up breaking up with this show if I don't find more to like.

I think everyone does a great job. I love Dabney Coleman as The Commodore - you can barely tell it's him.

Van Alden is a creepy character, but acted well.

I think this season was all a set up for a lot of real action, but I like the way Nucky operates.

Looks like there will indeed be more Chalky in season 2. Interview with creator Terence Winter: http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan- ... season-one

Quote:
Every first season of a show is a learning process, where you figure out what material works best for the actors, what stories work. What are some of the things you learned from the first season in terms of the strengths of the show, maybe things you should stay away from, characters you'd like to give more to, etc?

We'd definitely like to give more to Michael Kenneth Williams. Chalky was going to be a character we would only meet a little bit this season. That played out exactly as I intended, but he's just so great, I can't wait for his story to expand - and it will next season, quite a bit. But I kind of knew I'd feel that way as it was happening, but that character's arc was by design. It was almost more the appetizer than the entree, but now we'll have a lot more of him.

overall, I think this is the strongest thing HBO has done in years. I'll be curious how next season is gonna work out (I assume Van Alden -with Lucy's assistance- will make things very tough for Nucky along with the Commodore's faction. Also, Eli operating under Michael Pitt's character is obviously gonna end super.

Yeah, I thought it was great. Looking forward to more involvement of Chalky and Capone next season. Agent Van Alden is the best HBO character since Omar. Micheal Shannon is really good at batshit crazy, see My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done.

Yeah, most of this season has been really great.

I didn't watch it at all during S1 and started banging it out right as this season started; I feel bad for people who "gave up" on the show during S1 because they weren't getting what they wanted. I don't watch a lot of TV, but for me it's def. one of the best shows on TV, right up there with Mad Men.
