Sad day. Don Van Vliet/ Captain Beefheart has passed away. He was 69.

From Rolling Stone's Twitter page
Quote:
Very sad news: We've confirmed with his management that Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, has died. More details to come.

Not totally unexpected news as he had supposedly been in poor health for quite a while. He wasn't really that old, though.

You know what I'll be listening to tonight.

Damn. I like his early stuff but have never been able to enjoy Trout Mask Replica. Still, seemed like a genuine weirdo that made the world a better place.

I never liked TMR either. But I like the idea of the Captain. And I love his total freakishness. RIP.

Quote shouldn't have my name attached either. I'm a fan of Beefheart. Do your homework, Stu.

Me too. I've been hunting for this on ebay for awhile, along with Mirror Man.

I thought this was a great article and made me kind of fascinated with the guy, even when I wasn't a fan of TMR.

MONTY, where were you when I needed you?

Also, laugh a little. It's only the one album that carries both the most hyperbolic praise and polarizing hate among music snobs.

Also, RIP to a genuine weirdo. The freak flag flies at half mast tonight.

Wow. Sad news. Never got into him as much as I got into Zappa and the other people that ran in similar circles, but I always appreciated the albums. RIP.

My dad used to play Capt. Beefheart records when friends came over to my house when I was in middle school and high school to fuck with me. Despite that this is too bad, I like his voice, so weird and so good.

Last night at a (relatively) small club in Santa Cruz Los Lobos dedicated Volver, Volver to the Captain. When the crowd didn't respond loudly enough cheering Hidalgo glared at the crowd and said "come on... we're talking Captain Beefheart for chrissakes."

Nice!

I may have actually downloaded a bootleg of these at some point. I don't remember.

I've never really been drawn into anything I've heard from him but I do like people who take things into strange places, so kudos for that. And maybe someday I'll be in the right mood and hear the right thing.
