Please watch Fullscreen with HD on.

The music is "The Expert" by Brian DeRemer. http://www.brianderemer.com
I would describe his album as Bon Iver meets Dave Matthews.
Not really in the catswilleatyou listening pile so I don't know how to classify this sort of thing.
Some of you would probably love it.

This is the first time in about 4 or 5 years that I've tried to animate anything.
He was a real great guy to work for. He gave me full creative control to do my thing.

I really got into the project and I'd love to pick up some more music video work. So please feel free to share on your facebooks or twitters.

Super fucking impressive, Matt.
The song itself, is a take-it-or-leave-it kinda thing for me, but the video/animation...
I totally love this type of thing, and this is an exceptional example of it!

I will absolutely share it.
Hope that you get a ton more work.

Very nice!

I can certainly appreciate how much work can go into a mere 3 minutes of animation. This looks like it was quite an undertaking.

I really liked the church portion. The kaleidoscope effect at the end (even if that's just an AE filter) is nice, too.

Thanks. This is 4:52. Shoulda been 3 ;)

I lost track of many hours went into this. Hundreds.
But a lot of that was learning things that will help speed up the process in the future.
I could definitely start from scratch and make it faster and better.
There's much more I wanted to do with this but the deadline had passed a couple times already.

I did the kaleidoscope-ing in FCPX. Almost all style/color changes happened there.

Cats, this is really great.

What did you use? I know you mentioned FCPX for the kaleidoscope effect, but did you use AE? Love me some AE.

Well done, and well worth your time. Motivates me to get a project I've been sitting on and rethinking and over-analyzing to become an actuality.

I hear ya. I was paralyzed by this project at first because I was over-analyzing it. I had to start making lists of things that had to be drawn and then slowly plug away at those things.
Otherwise I would spend to much time just thinking about what was needed for every single scene. You gotta accept (and maybe even enjoy the fact) that it's never gonna be done.

AE is the main tool used. All of the animation and lighting was done in there.

My process for this went all over the place. Lots of hand drawing and then scanning and then redrawing and setting layers up for animating in pshop. I mocked up The Train and The Church in Sketch-Up just to figure out how I would redraw them in pshop later. I used garage band to make song snippets so I could scrub in AE for the lip-syncing stuff. Once the scenes are rendered out from AE I brought into FCPX to synchronize all clips to the track and then some additional coloring adjustments just to make it sync up on more occasions.

That was incredibly good, Semke. It over-shadowed the music by a good bit.

I don't think that bullets could remove this song from my head.
