Coachella may move out of Coachella, take 2014 off

Proposed tax hike on festies may force Coachella out of Indio.

Sheesh, between this and the news this evening about ATP possibly going to administration, what is going on with music festivals?

Would be very surprised if that even makes it onto the November ballot. Chasing Coachella (Goldenvoice) out of the Coachella Valley is the last thing that area needs. That fest brings a SHIT TON of money into the area each year.

Yeah you might be right about them backing down on the tax, but I highly doubt that Goldenvoice's statements about moving and taking the year off amount to anything more than a big bluff. Goldenvoice bought 280 acres of land in Indio last year and they could easily just pass on the tax to ticket buyers. Why would they take a year off and go through the headache of trying to find a new venue?

They've become a solid money maker which means folks are gonna start looking for theirs which inevitably fuck's shit up.

In June, Indio city councilman Sam Torres turned up the heat when he proposed a five-ten percent ticket tax on any live events hosting more than 2,500 people — in other words, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Music Festival.

Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett responded to the proposal last week, stating, “If the tax initiative of putting $4 million to $6 million onto Coachella gets on the ballot, we’re going to take off 2014; 2015 we’ll be at a new facility outside of Indio.” Now, as The Daily Swarm reports (via NBC Los Angeles), Torres has reneged his proposal, insisting, “I don’t take a threat by Paul Tollett lightly.”

The announcement came this afternoon, when Torres digressed in a press release: “I cannot in good conscience allow this to happen no matter how dire the city’s circumstance. My sincere hope is that we can now move past this episode and I personally look forward to working to enhance relationships.”
