If you like semi-fantasy epics, and if you especially liked Wizard and Glass, I just started a series you might be interested in. The first book in the series is called "A Game of Thrones" and it's a five book (so far) series with medieval themes. Very rich in character development. The first three chapters were really slow because there are tons of characters and it's hard to keep track, but once you get in the groove you can't put it down.

Heya,

I have read the first 3 books in this series, and they are addictive...

1. A Game of Thrones
2. A Clash of Kings
3. A Storm of Swords

The 4th just came out.

4. A Feast for Crows

I read these a few years ago while not being able to put them down one after the other. The books are very well written, with characters who actually die who were central to the plot. For this reason alone they really break out of the genre of fantasy. The lines blur between good and bad as the stories progress. Characters not central to the mainland plot get fully developed as separate entities and only hint at how long this series could become.

I am holding off reading the 4th book as it will only make me have to wait again. The amount of time between publication of books 3 and 4 was 5 years.
Ugh!

If you are at all familiar with Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time Series, this looks like it could be that long, with that kind of wait.

Read if you want to, but know that you will be left wanting shortly afterward.

Yeah, I probably won't even remember half of what happened if I try to pick up book 4 now. I'll have to reread the entire thing some years from now.

5 fokking years?!?!??!? No. I can't go through another long wait like this.

Educated guess, how long do you think this will go?

Here's what wikipedia has to say:

Quote:
Plans

The manuscript for the fifth volume is half-written as of May 2005:

* A Dance with Dragons

In a May 2005 statement, the author estimates that the series will require seven volumes. This is an increase from previously stated figures because Martin had to move some of the character arcs of the A Feast for Crows manuscript into A Dance with Dragons, due to the fact that the manuscript already exceeded the length of A Storm of Swords, which itself had to be split into two halves for several markets. Martin recognized that this decision could cause frustration among some of his fans. He wrote: "I know some of you may be disappointed, especially when you buy A Feast for Crows and discover that your favorite character does not appear, but given the realities I think this was the best solution... and the more I look at it, the more convinced I am that these two parallel novels, when taken together, will actually tell the story better than one big book." [1]

Martin originally intended the series to be a trilogy, but later increased that estimate, remarking, "What can I say? It's a BIG story, and a cast of thousands." [2] When A Storm of Swords was published, Martin announced that there would be six books. After A Storm of Swords, he began writing A Dance with Dragons, which was intended to take place five years after the end of A Storm of Swords without the use of many flashbacks, much to the dismay of many fans. However, he later announced that the five-year gap wasn't working, and therefore he would add another book, A Feast for Crows, to pick up where A Storm of Swords left off. Interestingly, his decision to stop writing one book and start another in order to chronicle part of that five-year gap is responsible for a five-year wait for the fourth installment.

Projected titles for the sixth and seventh books are A Time for Wolves and The Winds of Winter, respectively.

The Red Wedding must've happened last night (I'm too poor for HBO). My Facebook page is full of angry rants against the Freys.

Too funny. I've never read the books and felt the need to vent here and found this old thread in the search.

That episode last night might just be the best thing I've ever watched on television. Unflinchingly powerful. I am amazed that those who've read the books managed to keep that spoiler to themselves for so many years.

This was always my favorite post-show reaction video. Someone should probably check in on this guy.

SPOILERS BELOW.

I had no idea any of that was coming and was pretty blown away. Michelle Fairley (?) (Catelyn) was amazing. When she's just standing there as Robb is killed, you know she's already dead before the blade even touches her neck. I've been reading the Paste magazine recaps which have been pretty entertaining. The thing about GoT is Martin flipping traditional expectations. In most stories Robb would take revenge for his father's death. Here, he chooses love, acts on Honor and Principle...............and gets killed in a horrifically brutal way. As do most people of "honor" in this world. Still, totally ballsy to lose that many main characters at once.

There is a twitter feed out there called TheRedWedding that is compiling all the hysterically rash responses to the episode. Good for a laugh.

I was surprised they killed Talisa too, though I know he's married to a different character in the books and he left her behind at their camp. I knew what was coming and figured she'd get it too but not so brutally.

lol @ this 8 year old thread being bumped...

here's something that illustrates that the tv show creators were a little better at deflection than I think people gave them credit for

(it only contains footage from the series and doesn't spoil anything outright, but I wouldn't read the comments if you want to stay unspoiled)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsTVnZm9hFg

anyway, something to think about.

Crazy bots.

Even though I knew the season finale would never touch the red wedding in terms of shocking twists or bloodshed, I was still a bit underwhelmed. I'd hoped Dani would finally set sail for westeros, not just crowdsurf on a bunch of new dependents. Instead of a big cliffhanger episode, it instead felt like they were tying up plotlines. Which doesn't mean I still won't be anxiously awaiting next season.
