Another shitty band lead by the hype train that a lot of people seem to have boarded.
If a 15 year old who hates his step-dad or some neckbeard basement dweller liked this it would seem reasonable, but this is simply terrible.

Yeah I think this band is kind of bullshit, too.

It's just bland post-rock with really cartoonish "black metal" vocals. Oh, and the last track on the album sounds a little like My Bloody Valentine with said "black metal" vocals. "Blackgaze"!!!!

Innovation in 2013!

Audio makes it sound like one of them musicless parodies.

Edit: tho' the parody isn't quite as funny

I think that's the selling point. It's an "innovative" "metal" album that appeals to those who don't listen to a lot of "heavier" music and are suckers for propaganda and shitty vocals.

Except that the truly baffling thing is that I've seen longtime metal fans praising it all over the place.

I'm no metal expert. I listened to like 20 metal albums from 2013 which is more than I've probably ever listened to from any current year. Deafheaven was easily my least favorite of all of them.

Even in the same general vein you've got that album by Locrian which is much, much better. And yet it's gotten hardly any of the praise or publicity of Deafheaven.

In general I found 2013 to be a pretty weird and arbitrary year when it came to what rose to the top in terms of popularity and critical praise. Maybe I'm just getting old.

The vocals on that Deafheaven album are entertainingly funny for about 2 minutes.

Personally, although not "musicless", I still get a huge kick out of the Shreds series of videos of YouTube.

Every year is like this for me.
If I purchased all the hyped and praised indie/punk/electronic shit from the past decade, I'd have a lot of shitty albums.

Haha, maybe.

Every year since like 2002 (which is probably the first time I actively paid attention) has been a little like that for me, but 2013 definitely seemed worse.

A Kanye album that hardly anybody seemed to like? A Vampire Weekend record that wasn't even as good as their previous two? An incredibly boring Daft Punk album? Fucking Savages?

But what do I know. I still kind of like Arcade Fire.

I don't dislike Sunbather, but it was absent from my year-end list for a reason.

Deafheaven sounds, to me, like what most black metal would sound like if the bands had decent production.
So while I don't see the album as having many bad moments, it has precious few amazing moments, making it (in my opinion) a middle-of-the-road album. One I kick out from time to time, but I'll agree that the overwhelming critical support for it is a bit baffling.

Well, not "baffling" per se. It's obviously the aforementioned post-rocky guitars. I certainly won't begrudge Deafheaven them, though. They mix well with the sound. A solid aesthetic decision.

(And as an aside--I fucking love that Kanye album. Come at me, bitches.)

Every base assumption you have made here is fundamentally wrong.

I like 3-4 songs on the Kanye album, actually. I don't mind the album. It's just that he's reached this status of cultural importance where his every fart is going to be hyper-analyzed and overvalued, and about half of Yeezus is pretty much just farts.

And not the tracks you might think. The ones that are the biggest departures - namely "On Sight" - are the ones I like best. The crap is the stuff where he's still doing the AutoTune singing and sounding like outtakes of previous albums with even dumber lyrics.

I really enjoyed Dream House. I think it's a great track.

No, that sounds like Taake (latest album).
