Wouldn't call this an obsession, exactly, and it's something I totally missed in 2012, but Charlie Megira & the Modern Dance Club's "Love Police" album is amusing me a whole lot these days. Punk songs, surf songs, noize and ambient tape experiments, 31 tracks in total, and a large dollop of good ol' fashioned strange.

This new Moby album is pretty cool. It's typically Mobyish, especially on the "regular" tracks, but the collabs with Damien Jurado, Cold Specks, Wayne Coyne, and Mark Lanegan give it a little more flavor than his recent fare.

I heard a rumor that the new of Montreal was going to be back-to-the-roots stuff. Glad to report the rumor is true. A bit more uneven, and not quite as fun as what they were doing 10+ years ago (a tiny bit of the "mature" Americana sound that's more popular these days has leaked in), but a step in the right direction. That wild indie-electro shit from the previous 3 albums or so was getting atrocious.

I've been on a whiskey buzz for a few days now which may have contributed, but I've been knocked on my arse by The Resonars record from last year.

Quote:
Matt Rendon’s a time-traveling wizard miner with eight arms (or how ever many it takes to play all the instruments on this record). It’s bittersweet. I sure as fuck love the Resonars. Crummy Desert Sound is ‘60s British Invasion gold filtered through lonely-shack, isolated-DIY contemporary Tucson. Think of the rocket vapor over saguaros of Lenguas Largas. In 2013, he’s far from alone in his sound. Chicago’s Treasure Fleet also instantly comes to mind, which is pretty awesome. And I know I’m in the tiny minority when I say that I wait around in the back alleys of musical acceptance, hoping to hear a band that translates The Monks as fluently as The Knockout Pills, but fuck it. I am. Play this for your mom and dad (or are we at grandpa/grandma time? Decades, they pass fast.) and say it’s a long-lost pre-mastered Zombies or Animals record. Give them time to chew it over just to fuck with them. Because, at the root of it, most of those records of the ‘60s, by the time the vinyl got poo’d out and pressed into a disc, after they were fully digested through the intestinal tracts of the recording industry, they lost some of the raw grit and electrical zap of the live performances. Resonars gives you both: the glittering of found gold and the dirty fingernails and glorious sweat of digging in an isolated mine from a sealed-off time. Fuckin’ miner wizard

The War on Drugs - have listened to their NPR First Listen multiple times over the past week and am really loving it. Can't wait to get my hands on the album this week.

Isn't that Gerald Love (Teenage Fanclub) and Joe Pernice?
I think that I'm gonna need that one, too.

I lean more towards Kurt Vile, but like the new War on Drugs a lot.

I've been on a fairly large Lee Hazelwood kick

It's been all Everly Brothers and Dave Edmonds for me for like 2 weeks. I need to dig through this thread and find something recent... I'm starting to smell like an attic.
