Just working on a new mix. I think this stuff was discussed here at some point.

Looking for:

Pigmeat Markham - Here Comes The Judge
Nikki Giovanni - something from The Truth Is On Its Way
Lightnin' Rod - something from Hustler's Convention
Rudy Ray Moore - ???
Rhythm Heritage - Theme from SWAT
Incredible Bongo Band - Apache

and whatever else you might recommend. I already have Parliment, Gil Scot-Heron, Last Poets, Fatback Band etc.

I'm ok with really stretching the boundaries on this one - beat poetry, disco, Jamaican DJ "toasting", funk, etc. Really would prefer stuff with rapping, not just say, a James Brown song that everyone sampled.

Incredible Bongo Band - Apache

That track is on a compilation album I have called Dread Meets B-Boys Downtown compiled by Don Letts.

Unfortunately I don't have it ripped to my computer because being slow moving it takes me longer than the lifetime of a laptop to even get half my music on it.

Maybe you can find it by searching for that album though. It's got other stuff you might be interested in on it as well if that's your bag (Babe Ruth, The Mohawks, Hashim, Fantasy Three etc).

Isn't apache just a funk song that was sampled a billion times?

I think it was originally a Link Wray track but the most famous version was by The Shadows, the rather watered down and tepid British contemporaries of Wray, but it was a big hit for them.

Since then it's been covered a lot as with any song of 1950's vintage.

And yeah, there is no rapping on the Incredible Bongo Band version, it was sampled by hip-hoppers for the beats.

I'm ok with being a bit lax about what could be included. Any one of these tracks could be dismissed like

"Isn't that a guy just speaking his rhymes instead of singing them?"

and

"Isn't that just a DJ shouting over a record he's playing?"

and so on. It's when they all get mashed together that the new genre was born.

And in regards to "Apache" in particular, Sugarhill Gang ripped it for their own thing in '81, but even before that in the 70s the Bongo Band version was a b-boy anthem. Dudes loved to breakdance to it, which I think makes it an appropriate addition to a "roots of hip-hop" mix.

Sounds good to me.
Are you going to put Funky Drummer on the mix?

edit: Really would prefer stuff with rapping, not just say, a James Brown song that everyone sampled.

Yes, that is still my preference, but if I want to extend my mix to the usual 20 songs, I may have to throw in an instrumental or two.

Not to mention it would add some flavor to the mix. Just about any early rap track has that A-B-C-B flow. I might want to break it up a little.

Uncut or Mojo (can't remember which) did a mix of the Roots of Hip Hop with a lot of these artists. I know I used to have it but am not sure if I still do or where I would have put it if I did keep it. You might search for that though. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if both magazines had put out such mixes. I have Hustlers Convention but you'll need to give me some time to find the cd and rip and up it. What do people use for filesharing these days. I know my mediafire account was shot down for lack of activity.

The only Blowfly and RRM albums I have are Xmas albums and I doubt you really want those for this mix. does late 60's/early 70's spiritual jazz fit?

Yeah I have the MOJO comp, it's what inspired me to dig deeper and/or wider into the early stages of the genre. I'll see if Uncut ever did one. I'm def willing to listen to spiritual jazz recommendations. I will be patient for Hustler's Convention. Usually I just use sendspace.

I will also look into Bo!

Not so much individual tracks, but if you want to recreate some serious old school hip hop mixes, here's a good source:

Sorry I've been pretty busy these last few weeks and then kept forgetting about it. I'll try to get around to uploading Hustler's Convention this weekend. I assume you still need it?

I don't know if the spiritual jazz stuff fits what you're looking for or not. I don't think there's necessarily a direct tie in terms of any of it ever getting sampled or early rap artists being fans and being influenced by it. That said, there are a bunch of spiritual jazz albums from the late 60's/early 70's that are highly political works of arts about the black experience. They are grounded in jazz but feature spiritual singing, spoken word poetry, and more. Even if they aren't direct influences, they precede rap and share its influences. You should definitely check some of it out even if its not what you're really looking for. Its some of my favorite music.

Recommendations include: Archie Shepp "Attica Blues", Archie Shepp "The Cry of My People, Horace Silver "United States of Mind", Eddie Gale "Black Rhythm Happening", Eddie Gale "Ghetto Music" Also, also a ton of stuff from the labels Tribe Records, Black Jazz, and Strata East. Try any of those first four albums though before digging deeper.

Bumping this as I spend some time working on mixes. Listening to Archie Shepp right now and I like it. I accidentally deleted my entire itunes library so I'm kinda starting this mix from scratch again.

Ok here's what I got so far:

01. Eddie Gale - Black Rhythm Happening (Black Rhythm Happening, 1969)
02. Nikki Giovanni - Ego Tripping (The Truth Is On Its Way, 1971)
03. The Mohawks - The Champ (The Champ, 1968)
04. Pigmeat Markham - Here Comes The Judges (Here Comes The Judge/The Trial 45, 1968)
05. Gil-Scot Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (Pieces Of A Man, 1971)
06. The Last Poets - Mean Machine Chant (This Is Madness, 1971)
07. Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band - Scorpio (Evolution, 1971)
08. Rudy Ray Moore - Put Some Weight On It (The Turning Point, 1972)
09. Lightnin' Rod - The Bones Fly From Spoon's Hand (Hustler's Convention, 1973)
10. Incredible Bongo Band - Apache (Bongo Rock, 1973)
11. U-Roy - African Message (Dread In A Babylon, 1975)
12. Parliament - Flash Light (Funkentelechy Vs. Placebo Syndrome, 1977)
13. Herman Kelly & Life - Dance To The Drummer's Beat (Dance To The Drummer's Beat 12", 1978)
14. The Fatback Band - King Jim III (Personality Jock) (Fatback XII, 1979)
15. Spoonie Gee - Spoonin' Rap (Spoonin' Rap 12", 1979)
16. Lady B - To The Beat Ya'll (To The Beat Ya'll 12", 1979)
16. Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight (Rapper's Delight 12", 1979)

A few notes: Still looking for suitable (or obvious) tracks from James Brown, Jackson 5, Booker T, Black Heat, and whatever else might pop up.

The only Blowfly album I could acquire was The Weird World of Blowfly, which is just 70s soul parody. I know he has a "rapp" song but it wasn't released until 1980, which is off limits! Maybe there's something good in-between...

I could have sworn I had found another Parliament song other than "Flash Light" selected but can't for the life of me remember it. I'm kinda getting into them more each year, so maybe I'll just dig into their entire 70s discography.

Also I'll try to find a good edit of Rapper's Delight. I love the track and am happy with it being the bookend, but at almost 15 minutes it might seem to make the mix drag.

Update/Edit - Added Lady B, passing on Funky Four Plus One's "Rappin' and Rocking" because, again, it's a 15 minute track.

Also looking into some Watts Prophets stuff.

Yay it's done. I'd embed it here, but that never seems to work for me...
