Who's your favorite artist to ever come out of your city?

Could be someone on the local level or someone famous worldwide. Should be/have been based (or live/have lived) in the city in question while active musically, not just originally from or born there. Could be your hometown, whatever place you identify with most, or your current place of residence.

Here's what got me thinking about this:

Right now, I think Mastodon is my favorite band of all the ones I know of that have ever come out of Atlanta. That includes Outkast and any other hiphop and pretty much anything else I can think of. I don't check out a lot of local acts, but my general impression has always been that the local scene, at least the local rock scene, isn't nearly as strong as Athens or a lot of other college/music/art towns. Some great people may have come from here originally, but it seems like (up until the fairly recent hiphop boom) a lot of them had to go elsewhere to flourish.

But Mastodon is fucking awesome, and that's really more important.

-------

If I was gonna try to pick someone from my hometown, Montgomery, AL, that's a lot harder. I guess Hank Williams is pretty much the only viable choice.

This should be a lot more interesting for the NY, LA, Chicago, and Boston people and the Atl. folks who spent some time in Athens.

Star Room Boys for athens, and I guess Garbage for madison...? There aren't very many good bands up here that I know of.

i had a lot of Chicago songs stuck in my head this weekend as i would look at the CTA signs, think "you know Chicago used to be Chicago Transit Authority or something" and before you know it it's saturdays in the park.

Athens = Widespread (sorry, kids, they're MY fave)
Mobile = Buffett

Hey, Drinky.

Mastodon rocks is right. Hey, I've even got one of their releases up here in Toronto. Very cool.

Cuff the Duke is the band I'm going to forward that is a local band about to make waves. They do a gothic alt. counrty thing that is refreshing. Young kids all of them, yet with that wisdom and musicianship way beyond their years. It's as if they've taken many of the local canadian indie influences and infused them into their alt. country ways.

If I'm not wrong they will be the last band released on Three Gut records, before this label folds. RIYL Wilco

Cheers,
audiobill

Not many bands come out of here, but World Leader Pretend is from here, and Tab Benoit if anybody is into that kinds of thing.

Better than Ezra is from Baton Rouge where I moved from.

I guess that, going back a bit it would probably be:
CURTIS MAYFIELD, then.

Or maybe, THE STAPLE SINGERS

But I was thinking just more-recent history.

High Point, NC (where my parents stay at and I went to hs) - John Coltrane
Raleigh, NC (college) - The Cherry Valence are probably the band from Raleigh I like the most, but I don't tend to know many bands from the city
Charlotte, NC (current) - no idea

I'm shocked you didnt mention your own band.

hmmmm

ATL: Outkast I guess, but I really like the Black Crowes as well.

Athens: REM, but Widespread and Olivia Tremor Conrol are right up there.

Peachtree City: Elliot Wave (in the golden age of local bands in the early 90's, I thought these guys were tops); Honorable mentions to Thumbnail Sketch and Opus Fairgrounds (the Cap'n and I's project from those days)

If anything better than Kings X has come out of Houston, TX then I am just not thinking hard enough.

Yes, I know about Beyonce and Destiny's Child.

Actually there is a post punk/new wave band from Houston called Modulator that are pretty cool. They are similar to Ladytron, Client, and Black Box Recorder.

That would be too obvious.

This is a hard question

Hendrix is by far the most talented and probably my favorite, but it's almost unfair to compare anyone.

Nirvana made almost as big a splash

Currently it's Pretty Girls Make Graves

No. I'm not always up on hip hop as I would like to be. I'll look for it, though.

Reigning Sound/ Anything else Greg Cartwright has been involved in

Runner up spots go to The Grifters and Snowglobe recently, and Stax, Hi, and The Guilloteens way before my time.
