Every of you that I've spoken to with voices has called this place Awb-ner, even its creator and resident princess. Is this an American thing or what?

I call it Ooobner. Perkele, for the brief micro second he posted here, corrected me around the office by saying it should be Obbner but I like Ooobner.

Anything Ooo is good. Or rather goood.

though if you faithfully recreate the word from the syllables of its filthy progenitor, it would form the 2nd, I think that taken on its own, it makes sense to pronounce it as you would "obstinate," "obstetrician," "obtuse," "obtain," "obnoxious," and the like.

I call it ahber. But sometimes I get it bass-ackwords and call it boner.

Or I guess if I got it backwords that would actually be renbo.

And these two are pronouced more uhb than awb. There's no way I'm accepting Uhb-ner as a viable inflection of the name.

i can only think of one "ob-" word pronounced "ohb," and that's "obese." do we really want to be known as a fat phallus?

When faced with pronounciation problems I always think "How would David Byrne sing this?" and I take that as my definative answer.

I hastily voted for the second one, but after repeating every Ob- word I know quietly to myself, I'd like to change my vote to the first.

I don't think I've ever had reason to say Obner out loud, however.

So, I suppose you say 'robe', as in a gown, ROH - bee?

But, at least, you and my floormates freshman year would have gotten on well. Our RA was named Jeremy Dobbe. They pronounced it DOH - bee; I pronounced it DAH - bee. I mean, you don't say it Ty COHB, no?

If not, we're gonna hafta rename the board "Needledick".

I pronounce it "obe-ner" because I do indeed "faithfully recreate the word from the syllables of its filthy progenitor". Which just makes sense, IMO. I've never even considered it might be pronounced differently by others.

Exactly. What about the word suggests that it should be pronounced with a long O sound?

In what world are the words "obtain" and "obnoxious" not pronounced with AT LEAST a short O sound (and who in the hell actually says these words with a long O)? I can go on record that I have never, ever heard anyone, ever, ever, anywhere, at any point . . . wait for it . . . ever pronounce them "uhbtain" and "uhbnoxious," not even the most backwoods hick who had never seen the words before, if they could read at all, that is.
