John Vanderslice is such a nice guy I'd feel bad getting his album for free...which i did, but legally.

He might be a nice guy, but I'll be pissed if I bought it and hated it, so I'll check out this here kindly offer from Sir Shiv. If I like, I'll buy and support the nice guy. If I don't like, I'll delete and the nice guy will have to go that much hungrier.

He is a nice guy, but I'm not a fan of his music.

Bought this last night.

Not sure what to think of it yet. It's REALLY low-key. John's vocals have improved a ton, though. And the production is brilliant as always. I'm sure I'll grow to love it as much as the others.

Yeah, that drummer is fantastic. I'm not sure if he's Dave Douglas, but it sounds like it here.

From JV's email list:

Ian Bjornstad: Wurlitzer, Moog Source
Dave Douglas: Drums, Keyboards
David Broecker: Bass, Keyboards
Dan Brennan: Live Sound, Samples
JV: Vocals, Guitar

I have a new, permanent band. I will play with these guys as long as they'll have me: Ian played in Denton, TX bands (The Dooms UK) and roomed with Matt Pence. Dave D. you know and love from many JV tours. We stole Mr. Broecker from the Prom, a lovely band on Barsuk. Dan has toured extensively with Cursive and Good Life. I am very excited about this line-up. We've been in rehearsal since May and we know most of PR and a lot of back catalog.

I don't think it is him. I think Christopher McGuire was the crazy drummer.

I am getting this album. Instantly in my top 10 for the year.

Are his previous ones as good as this?

I have listened to some of his older stuff and never really got into it despite the enormous parise heaped by the then-CMJ board. But seeing him and hearing this album might force me to revisit these things.

I'll have to hear this one before a purchase. I liked Cellar Door a lot early on, but my attention flagged for some reason, and I probably haven't listened to it in 6 months. I think it started sounding sterile, with more emphasis on production than emotion.

I haven't heard the new one yet, but I really like his earlier work. I actually prefer Time Travel Is Lonely and Life and Death of an American Fourtracker to Cellar Door---but all three albums are very good.

Same question here.

I just picked this up at lunch today after hearing Shiv's kindly offering, or actually about half of it. I just knew it was a must have, like I knew I needed Andrew Bird's Mysterious Origin . . . . Pixel Revolt evokes the same kind of feelings, now that I think about it.

After a couple of listens, I'd concur that this is quite good. Thanks for the link Shiv. I'm going to have to buy this one tomorrow. I'd agree with whoever said that his vocals are much improved on this album.

Dead Slate Pacific is particularly gorgeous.
