Hate to say it, but despite the respect I have for these boys, I simply cannot get into:
The Redwalls - de nova

Yes, the melodies are good.
Yes, they can play.
Yes, the production is appealingly retro and raw.
Yes, the harmonies are tight.

There's just something there that's kinda "been there, done that" about the release, and I just can't groove on it like I thought I would.

Oh yeah, they're amazing for a bunch of kids. But take away their age, and the music is just solid, workmanlike, but sadly unspectacular retro pop.

The next release may blow my ass away, and I WILL check it out.
But for now... de nova is just kinda ho-hum.

The Dead 60s

I was intrigued because every review of them referenced the Specials and the Clash, but the only similarity to the Specials was in their anemic attempt at Twin/Tone ska - and if they sound at all like the Clash it's the exhausted, tuneless Clash of Combat Rock. Maybe if the Dead 60s could write a melody - or even a single hook - the album wouldn't suck so hard. But suck hard it does.

<---- still likes the Redwalls album a whole bunch. I figure if you place Pop Todd's criteria for regretting buying De Nova against any other pop rock band (including his own) and you'll get to "ho hum" ten times out of ten.

totally agree.

they showed potential with their demo and early singles, but their album is an overproduced pile of incredibly boring and hook-less songs. a real shame, because they have solid energy, and are a tight band, but man does their songwriting suck.

Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman

"Regret" may be a stong word since I own all of Ben Folds previous (normal) releases but this album was so disappointing and boring for me. One of my favorite artists of the past ten years but I'll be more carefull before buying whatever he puts out next.

I'm sure there are others but I don't have all of my 2005 purchases in front of me right now so I can't think of them.

Not that its new or anything but...

For three bucks I was robbed. This a clumsy attempt of him singing cover tunes with a terrible lounge-style backing band. And before you say, of course its shite, its fucking Boy George... I've followed some of his other solo work: the soundtrack to The Crying Game, Jesus Loves You, his DJ albums and remixes and I'm here to tell you that they are good.

Momus - Otto Spooky

You'd think a concept album about a illegal Chinese immigrant who is forced into a life of cockle picking would be better that this.

Well, I would...

The Raveonettes' new album. I should've listened to the critics. Pure crap. Probably, the worst album of the year.

One of the few times I've disagreed with Todd.
I dig this record for its 'sheer entertainment' factor.

I like the Momus a lot more than I used to. At first it seemed like aimless and thin noodling, but it's grown on me quite a bit.

Shut yer mouth. That thing is the bee's knees, despite being WAY different than their other stuff. Live, the stuff kills.

Nothing I've regretted buying, but I wish I would've cracked my promo copy of "Illinois" over my knee after the first 10 minutes.
Utter crap.

I was close to adding this as well. While I think it's overrated and I don't particularly love it, I wouldn't say I regret buying it all together.

i don't think there's anything i bought that i've really regretted since i mostly download everything first to check it out. i did sell saafir's the hit list back but i wasn't too upset over it since i only paid $5 for it.

The only two albums that I purchased and just don't care much for are Crooked Fingers and Mercury Rev.

There are a few that have been a bit of a let-down for me, but have some redeeming qualities---Doves, Beck, British Sea Power, M83 and Alaska! come to mind. I don't dislike these albums, but I think my expectations were just a little too high for them.

Ditto. The City on Film was my "bad eMusic download" of the year.
