Afer the initial suprise at what a straightforward, unquirky singer-songwriter CD it is, the songs are proving to be very strong, I think.

Maybe not as fun overall, but they prove he can be not-obtuse and still likeable.

Still a major disappointment. It all seems a little too timid to me, as if Frank Black and all those studio pros were afraid to upstage each other. Plus the melodies are so similar all the songs sorta blend into one another. And on top of all that (and as, I think, billy g said), definitely the worst version of "Dark End Of The Street" this side of Michael Bolton.

That said, I kinda like the album. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody, though.

Yeah, I'm just keeping my dissapointment to myself, thank you very much.

It does have some pretty fine moments, though.....

I am massively dissappointed for pretty much all the reasons Rads said.

It's meh. Radcliffe is right when he said it was timid.

I like it, but it does sort of melt together. I much prefer Black Letter Days.

Exactly. I was hoping for some stomping country romps, but instead I got a cd of neat little country-ish ballads, mid-tempo songs.

I still like it quite a lot, but I was never a rabid fan of his solo stuff so it suffers very little in comparison to his previous output.

WTF - there's a new Frank Black album out there?

Oh well - I'll listen to "Teenager" in recognition, then try to forget this fact...

Only a few songs since "Frank Black and the Catholics" have piqued my interest...

I have been really trying, desperately trying, to find something about solo Frank Black that I like as much as the Pixies. I only have his first two records. Everytime I try to listen to one of them though, I just get frustrated and throw a Pixies album on. Help!

Considering that he only spent four days recording it the songs do come out pretty well.

Try "Blast Off" from Dog In The Sand. And crank it. If that doesn't work, you may have to accept the fact that you just like the Pixies better.
