I posted this in my BSS out of the loop thread, but no one commented, so here goes again: http://www.brianudelhofen.com/DJshadow.html

It's a high school band recreating 2 DJ Shadow tracks. A for effort.

It's possibly the most PoMo thing I've seen since that Diplo/MIA discussion.

I'm not quite sure what you said about PoMo, Diplo/ MIA, BSS, or loop thread, but I understood high school band recreating DJ Shadow.

i would totally be checking this out right now if they were audio files and not video. As it stands i'll look at 'em when I get home.

the awesome part is that Shadow can release these on Cali-Tex in 20 years, heretofore completing the circle.

incidentally, has anyone heard Schoolhouse Funk 2? I just found out I'm missing the first one and I'm pissed.

Oh man...that would be sweet!

TJ - there was a discussion about authenticity/integrity/other -ity words as it concerned Diplo's leveraging of a style of music that he basically had nothing to do with as an average white dude from an upper middle class background. It got really mucked in the mire from that point forward...wait, maybe this happened on another board. ILM?

As to PoMo - Shadow, suburban white guy, takes other parts of long-forgotten music, usually by urban non-white guys, creates entirely new slabs of music in a genre full of urban non-white guys and now 8 years on, a high school band in Wisconsin is literally recreating the samples in a traditionally ultra white context, with all of the trappings that entails. It was like a performance piece.

OK, I'm not explaining that very well. Sorry!

Being a Shadow apologist and former band geek, I am digging this in a big way. I've had the idea of doing (more like seeing it done) something like this with "Blood on the Motorway" complete with chimes, hand-bell choir, drummer extraordinare, and Steve Winwood on vox if he's available.

I was dissapointed with Volume 1. I heard better high school bands around LA. Like St. Bernard's in Marina Del Rey who used to have an amp & speakers for the drums & would play the beat to Audio 2's "Top Billin" back in '88.
